❓ “Can We Sin Willfully?” — What About Hebrews 10:26?

🔥 The Verse That Raises Eyebrows:
“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins…”
— Hebrews 10:26
On the surface, this sounds terrifying, especially to someone who believes in eternal security. But don’t panic — it’s all about context and audience. 🧭
🧩 Who is Hebrews written to?
The book of Hebrews is written to the Hebrews — that is, to Israel, particularly those enduring the tribulation and anticipating the New Covenant (Jer. 31:31–34).
They were:
• Awaiting Christ’s kingdom (Heb. 2:5)
• Warned not to fall away (Heb. 6:6)
• Taught to endure to the end (Matt. 24:13)
This is not the gospel of grace revealed to Paul for the Body of Christ (Rom. 16:25; Eph. 3:2–6). It’s kingdom doctrine for Israel — under a different program.
✋ So what does “sin willfully” mean here?
Hebrews 10 is warning Jewish believers about apostasy — deliberately rejecting Christ as Messiah after knowing the truth.
It’s not just struggling with sin. It’s turning back to the law, or denying the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus (Heb. 10:10).
🧯 “No more sacrifice” = If you reject Christ, there is no other atonement.
That makes perfect sense in Israel’s prophetic program…
But it does not describe believers in the Body of Christ, who are sealed, complete, and forgiven.
✅ What about us today?
As members of the Body of Christ, we live under the dispensation of grace, not under the law (Rom. 6:14).
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1
“In whom we have redemption… the forgiveness of sins.” — Colossians 1:14
“If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” — 2 Timothy 2:13
💡 Yes, believers today still sin (even willfully at times) — but our salvation is not based on our performance, it’s based on Christ’s finished work.
✨ So,
Can we sin willfully? Sadly, yes. 😔
But if you’re saved today, you’re:
🩸 Already forgiven (Eph. 1:7)
🔐 Sealed by the Spirit (Eph. 1:13)
✅ Complete in Christ (Col. 2:10)
💖 Called to walk worthy — not to stay saved, but out of gratitude and growth (Titus 2:11–12)
📌 Hebrews 10:26 is not a warning to the Body of Christ.
It’s a sober warning to Israel in a different dispensation.
Don’t let misapplied fear verses rob you of grace-filled assurance.
