Standing Firm in a World of Religious Confusion
There’s something every believer must learn early.
The greatest danger to your faith
is not always atheism…
not always the world…
not always open sin.
Sometimes the greatest danger
wears a religious mask.
Looks spiritual.
Sounds biblical.
But slowly pulls you away from truth.
Paul calls it:
“the wiles of the devil.”
(Ephesians 6:11)
Not open attack.
Subtle deception.
Counterfeits.
Satan doesn’t show up with horns.
He shows up with religion.
Paul says Satan transforms himself
into an angel of light
(2 Corinthians 11:14).
That means:
• false systems
• man-made traditions
• human viewpoint
• worship that looks right but isn’t
Religion that honors God with lips…
but not with truth.
And if we’re not grounded in Scripture,
we won’t see the difference.
▪️Put on the armor
Paul doesn’t say:
“Try harder.”
“Be emotional.”
“Follow your feelings.”
He says:
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand.”
Stand.
Stand.
Stand.
Because deception is constant.
Truth must be intentional.
▪️What happens when people reject God’s Word?
Romans 1 explains it clearly.
When people reject God’s knowledge:
• their thinking becomes vain
• imagination replaces truth
• the creature replaces the Creator
And soon…
Religion becomes man-made.
Idols appear.
Traditions multiply.
God’s Word disappears.
Israel did it in Judges.
Israel did it in the wilderness.
And churches still do it today.
History repeats when truth is ignored.
▪️Separation is not legalism — it’s protection
Paul says something strong:
“Come out from among them, and be ye separate.”
(2 Corinthians 6:17)
Notice:
He didn’t say isolate from sinners.
He said separate from unclean systems.
Context?
Religion.
False worship.
Spiritual compromise.
Being unequally yoked in spiritual matters.
Because when truth and error mix…
Truth always gets diluted.
Never strengthened.
▪️Why does this matter so much?
Because of who you are.
You’re not just a church attendee.
You’re not just religious.
Paul says:
“Ye are the temple of the living God.”
(2 Corinthians 6:16)
God lives in you.
Individually.
Collectively.
The Holy Spirit dwells there.
So why would the temple mix with idols?
Why would grace mix with corruption?
Why would truth mix with error?
It shouldn’t.
It can’t.
It must not.
▪️The danger most believers miss
Sometimes the “unclean thing” isn’t obvious sin.
Sometimes it’s religious covetousness.
Joshua 7 tells of Achan.
He saw something connected to an accursed system…
He wanted it.
He took it.
And it brought trouble to everyone.
That’s a warning.
Not everything labeled “Christian” is safe.
Not every ministry is sound.
Not every religious movement is from God.
If money, power, and control drive it…
Be careful.
Very careful.
▪️So what keeps us safe?
Not feelings.
Not popularity.
Not tradition.
Only one thing:
👉 The Word of God.
Scripture is:
• our light
• our compass
• our safeguard
• our authority
If it isn’t grounded in the Word rightly divided…
It isn’t safe.
No matter how sincere it looks.
▪️Here’s the simple path forward
Stay grounded.
Stay discerning.
Stay separate.
• Know your Bible
• Rightly divide
• Stand in grace
• Refuse religious confusion
Not angry.
Not proud.
Not harsh.
But firm.
Clear.
Unmoved.
Because today, in this dispensation of grace,
God isn’t building religion.
He’s building the Body of Christ.
Not traditions.
Not systems.
Not institutions.
People.
Saved by grace.
Grounded in truth.
Standing firm.
Stand therefore.
(Ephesians 6:14)
Not swayed.
Not fooled.
Not mixed.
Stand.
