Do You Know the Mysteries?
The Bible speaks often about “mysteries”—but not in the way people usually think. In Scripture, a mystery is not something mysterious forever. It is a truth purposed by God before the world began, kept hidden for a time, and revealed at the right moment—specifically through the apostle Paul.
Understanding these mysteries is not optional.
Paul says we are stewards of them (1 Corinthians 4:1).
Let’s walk through them—slowly, clearly, and biblically.
▪️What Is a “Mystery” in Scripture?
Paul defines it plainly:
“We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.”
(1 Corinthians 2:7)
A biblical mystery is:
• Part of God’s eternal plan
• Hidden from past ages
• Unknown to rulers and powers
• Revealed after the cross
• Made known through Paul
Had the rulers of this world known this wisdom:
“They would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
(1 Corinthians 2:8)
That tells us something important:
👉 The concealment of the mystery was intentional and strategic.
▪️The Dispensation of Grace — A Hidden Phase in God’s Plan
The age we live in now—the dispensation of grace—was not foretold by the prophets.
Paul says it was:
“Given me to you-ward”
(Ephesians 3:2)
It was purposed before the world,
but revealed after Israel’s fall,
and centered on the risen Christ speaking from heaven.
This present dispensation explains:
• Why Israel is temporarily set aside
• Why Gentiles are saved apart from the Law
• Why God is forming a heavenly people today
▪️The Core Mystery: The Body of Christ
At the heart of all Pauline mysteries is one central truth:
👉 The Body of Christ
Not Israel.
Not the Kingdom.
Not prophecy fulfilled.
But a new organism:
• Jew and Gentile made one
• No covenant distinction
• No earthly kingdom promises
• One spiritual body in Christ
“By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.”
(1 Corinthians 12:13)
This Body was never revealed in the Old Testament.
▪️Israel’s Blindness & the Fullness of the Gentiles
Paul reveals another mystery:
“Blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.”
(Romans 11:25)
This does not mean:
• A set number of Gentiles get saved
• Or the “last Gentile” triggers prophecy
It means:
👉 Gentiles, as a whole, will eventually reject grace, just as Israel once rejected their message.
When that happens:
• The dispensation of grace ends suddenly
• God resumes His prophetic dealings with Israel
• The Church is removed first
Grace does not fade out.
It ends abruptly.
▪️God Is Not Done With Israel
This teaching rejects replacement theology.
God has not replaced Israel with the Church.
God has not canceled His promises.
Paul says:
“God hath not cast away his people.”
(Romans 11:1)
Israel’s calling is earthly.
The Body of Christ’s calling is heavenly.
Confusing the two creates:
• Doctrinal contradiction
• Confused hope
• Misapplied promises
Right division protects God’s faithfulness.
▪️Paul Alone Received the Mystery
Paul is clear:
“By revelation He made known unto me the mystery…”
(Ephesians 3:3)
This mystery includes:
• Gentiles being fellow-heirs
• Of the same Body
• Partakers of the same promise
Not by prophecy.
Not by covenant.
But by Paul’s gospel.
Before this revelation:
• Gentiles were “without hope” (Ephesians 2:12)
• Aliens from Israel
• Outside God’s dealings
Now?
They are complete in Christ.
▪️The Church and Christ — A Great Mystery
Paul calls the relationship between Christ and the Church:
“A great mystery.”
(Ephesians 5:32)
This is not Israel as a wife.
It is something higher:
• Christ as Head
• The Church as His Body
• A heavenly union
• Eternal and spiritual
▪️The Mystery of Godliness
“Great is the mystery of godliness…”
(1 Timothy 3:16)
This is not merely about Christ’s incarnation—that was prophesied.
This mystery is:
👉 Christ living through His Body today
God manifesting Himself:
• In believers
• Through grace
• In a hostile world
We are left here as:
• Ambassadors
• Reconcilers
• Truth-bearers
▪️Christ in You — The Hope of Glory
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
(Colossians 1:26–27)
This indwelling presence:
• Was hidden from past ages
• Is real now
• Guarantees future glorification
This is our hope—not reforming the world system.
▪️The Rapture — A Revealed Mystery
“Behold, I shew you a mystery…”
(1 Corinthians 15:51)
The rapture:
• Was not prophesied
• Happens suddenly
• Ends the dispensation of grace instantly
No transition period.
No gradual shift.
Grace ends when the Body is complete.
▪️The Mystery of Iniquity
Satan also works through a mystery:
“The mystery of iniquity doth already work.”
(2 Thessalonians 2:7)
While God builds His Body:
• Satan prepares deception
• A counterfeit system grows
• The stage is set for prophecy to resume
The Body of Christ restrains that system now.
When we’re removed, restraint is gone.
▪️Our Responsibility Today
Paul says:
“Let a man so account of us, as… stewards of the mysteries of God.”
(1 Corinthians 4:1)
We are not promised:
• World domination
• Global revival
• Earthly rule
We are called to:
• Redeem the time
• Proclaim grace
• Bring people into the Body of Christ
This is the hope for today.
▪️Conclusion: Final Encouragement
The mysteries are not side issues.
They explain:
• Where we are in God’s plan
• Who we are in Christ
• What our mission is right now
If you want clarity, peace, and confidence—
stay with Paul.
Rightly divided truth changes everything.
