📖 “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8
This verse is often quoted to suggest that God’s dealings with mankind never change — and therefore, dispensational distinctions are invalid. But is that what the verse really teaches?
Let’s rightly divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15) and examine it closely 👇
🧱 1. The Verse Is About Christ’s Character — Not His Instructions
Hebrews 13:8 is a beautiful truth: Jesus Christ is unchanging in His character, nature, holiness, love, and deity. This is a comforting, eternal truth.
🔁 But this verse is not saying that God’s dealings with mankind, or His instructions to people in different dispensations, are always the same.
✅ His essence does not change.
🚫 But His instructions to mankind certainly do change across dispensations.
📜 2. God’s Dealings Have Changed — Even in the Bible!
Let’s take a look at a few examples:
🔸 Adam was told not to eat from one tree (Gen. 2:17)
🔸 Noah was told to build an ark and eat animals (Gen. 6:14; 9:3)
🔸 Israel was given the law (Exodus 20), including tithes, Sabbaths, sacrifices
🔸 Today, Paul tells us we are not under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14)
Are these contradictions? No.
They are progressive revelations in God’s plan — different instructions for different people at different times.
✝️ 3. Jesus’s Earthly Ministry Was to Israel, Under the Law
📖 “But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” — Matthew 15:24
Jesus’ earthly teachings were directed to Israel in fulfillment of prophecy and the law (Romans 15:8). He preached:
• The gospel of the kingdom (Matthew 4:23)
• Required baptism and repentance (Mark 1:4)
• Told followers to sell all (Luke 18:22)
But when we read Paul’s letters, we find something very different!
💡 4. Paul Reveals the Mystery: A New Dispensation
Paul was given a new revelation — the mystery — that had been kept secret since the world began (Romans 16:25).
📖 “…the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward.” — Ephesians 3:2
📖 “For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…” — Romans 11:13
In this new dispensation:
✅ We are saved by grace through faith, not by law (Eph. 2:8–9)
✅ There is one baptism — spiritual (1 Cor. 12:13)
✅ We walk by faith, not by signs (2 Cor. 5:7)
These are not contradictions of Jesus’ earlier message — they are a new revelation from the risen, glorified Christ to Paul.
🤔 5. Then What Does “Jesus Christ the Same…” Mean?
Simply put:
🔒 Jesus is always faithful, true, and unchanging in His divine person.
But the way He administers His purpose does change over time — this is why we have different dispensations.
📖 God has not always told people the same thing.
🔄 Hebrews 13:8 is not a verse about doctrine, dispensations, or programs — it’s about Jesus’ unchanging faithfulness.
🧱 6. Right Division Clears the Confusion
🔎 When we rightly divide:
• We don’t ignore Jesus’ words — we understand to whom He spoke
• We don’t reject Scripture — we put it in its proper context
• We see that God gave different instructions to Israel and the Body of Christ
• We rejoice that the same unchanging Lord is behind it all!
📌 Conclusion
✅ Jesus Christ never changes in His person.
🔁 But God’s instructions for people have changed throughout the Bible.
🧱 Right division doesn’t deny Jesus — it honors His Word by putting it in the right context.
So no — Hebrews 13:8 does not contradict Mid-Acts Right Division.
Instead, it glorifies the unchanging God who administers His purposes through different programs at different times — all according to His perfect will.
📖 Verses to Study:
• 2 Timothy 2:15 — Rightly divide the Word
• Romans 15:8 — Jesus was a minister to Israel
• Ephesians 3:1–9 — The mystery revealed to Paul
• Hebrews 13:8 — Jesus’ unchanging nature
• Romans 16:25 — Kept secret since the world began
• Galatians 2:7 — Two gospels: one to the circumcision, one to the uncircumcision
🙌 Final Thought:
God’s Word is perfect — but it must be rightly divided to avoid confusion.
Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever — and that includes how faithful He is to His promises in every dispensation.
