— Romans 9 Isn’t About Who Goes to Heaven or Hell
Romans 9 has become one of the most debated chapters in Scripture.
Some read it and conclude:
“God chooses some people for salvation… and passes over others.”
Others assume:
“Man has no real choice.”
But what if the confusion comes from ignoring the context?
What if right division clears the fog?
Because Romans 9 is not teaching Calvinism.
It is not fatalism.
It is not God creating people for destruction.
It is something much simpler.
And much more consistent with the character of God.
Much more consistent with grace.
▪️FIRST: THE CONTEXT OF ROMANS 9–11 MATTERS
Romans 9–11 is dealing with a national issue:
What happened to Israel?
If Israel was God’s chosen nation under prophecy…
Why are they fallen?
Why are Gentiles receiving blessing?
Paul is answering questions about Israel’s program, not explaining individual predestination to heaven or hell.
The discussion centers on:
• Nations
• Covenants
• Roles
• Service
• God’s dealings with Israel
Not eternal destinies.
When we forget that distinction, confusion follows.
When we remember it, the chapter begins to fit.
Right division matters.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.”
— 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
▪️JACOB AND ESAU: ELECTION TO PURPOSE, NOT SALVATION
Paul writes:
“That the purpose of God according to election might stand…”
— Romans 9:11 (KJV)
Notice the emphasis:
Purpose.
Not eternal salvation.
Jacob was chosen as the covenant line through whom God’s prophetic purpose for Israel would continue.
Esau was not.
That is election to service.
Election to role.
Election to purpose.
Not predestination to heaven or hell.
God selected a nation through which His earthly kingdom program would move forward.
That is entirely different from saying God condemned individuals before birth.
Those are not the same thing.
▪️“JACOB HAVE I LOVED, BUT ESAU HAVE I HATED”
This phrase often shocks readers.
Until we remember where Paul quotes it from:
Malachi 1.
Centuries after Jacob and Esau lived.
The issue is national.
Israel and Edom.
And Edom’s history was marked by rebellion against God and violence toward Israel.
Read Obadiah.
God’s judgment was not arbitrary.
It was righteous.
Because God always judges justly.
Always.
“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
— Genesis 18:25 (KJVV)
If a doctrine portrays God as unjust…
The problem is not God.
The problem is the doctrine.
▪️IS THERE UNRIGHTEOUSNESS WITH GOD?
Paul asks:
“Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.”
— Romans 9:14 (KJV)
Meaning:
Absolutely not.
Impossible.
God never:
• Condemns without cause
• Violates His own righteousness
• Creates men merely to destroy them
His judgments are true.
His dealings are just.
His mercy is real.
▪️WHAT ABOUT GOD’S MERCY?
Paul says:
“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy…”
— Romans 9:15 (KJV)
Context matters again.
This is not God deciding who may believe the gospel.
This is God determining whom He will use in His program.
Moses received mercy.
Why?
So he could serve in God’s purpose concerning Israel.
That is mercy connected with service.
Not salvation by grace through faith.
Those categories must not be mixed.
▪️PHARAOH: HARDENED… OR RESPONSIBLE?
Pharaoh is often presented as proof that men have no choice.
Yet Exodus repeatedly shows Pharaoh hardening his own heart before God judicially hardens him.
Pharaoh:
• oppressed Israel
• rejected truth
• chose rebellion
God then used Pharaoh’s stubbornness to display divine power.
That is sovereignty without removing responsibility.
God rules.
Man answers.
Both are true.
▪️GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY DOES NOT CANCEL HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY
Nebuchadnezzar learned this.
After pride brought him low, he finally declared:
“Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven…”
— Daniel 4:37 (KJV)
He responded.
He acknowledged.
He humbled himself.
God deals with men as responsible creatures.
Not robots.
▪️SO WHAT IS ROMANS 9 REALLY TEACHING?
Romans 9 teaches that God has the right to use:
• Nations
• Leaders
• Circumstances
• Kingdom programs
to accomplish His purpose.
Israel had a role.
Pharaoh had a role.
Moses had a role.
Edom had a role.
And today?
Something changed.
A new dispensation was revealed.
Not prophecy.
Mystery.
Paul writes:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
— Romans 11:13 (KJV)
Today, in the Dispensation of Grace, salvation is not through Israel’s covenants.
Not through lineage.
Not through law.
Not through works.
But through the finished work of Christ.
“…Christ died for our sins… was buried… and rose again the third day…”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)
That gospel is offered freely.
To all.
▪️TODAY GOD IS EXTENDING GRACE
We live in a unique administration:
The Dispensation of the Grace of God.
The Church, the Body of Christ, possesses a heavenly calling, distinct from Israel’s earthly kingdom hope.
And salvation today is gloriously simple:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works…”
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
No wondering:
“Am I elect?”
No fear:
“Was I excluded?”
No uncertainty:
“Did God choose someone else?”
Grace means grace.
Freely offered.
Freely received by faith.
▪️THE CONCLUSION IS GLORIOUS
Romans 9 is not teaching predestination to damnation.
It is teaching God’s righteousness in carrying out His purpose.
And today?
God is not revealing who was secretly chosen.
He is proclaiming:
Christ died for sinners.
Grace is available.
Salvation is offered.
Friend, rest there.
Rest in Christ.
Rest in His finished work.
Rest in the certainty that God is righteous, merciful, and just.
Because the message for today is not:
“Wonder if you are elect.”
The message is:
Believe the gospel.
And be found complete—
In Christ.
