Many people get confused when reading verses that seem to teach opposite things about salvation:
👉 John 10:28–29 – “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”
➡️ This clearly sounds like eternal security—once saved, always saved.
👉 Hebrews 6:4–6 – “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost… If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
➡️ This sounds like a person could fall away and lose salvation.
🤔 So which is it? Eternal security or conditional salvation?
The answer comes when we Rightly Divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
📖 Different Programs in the Bible
💡 Hebrews was written to Israel, not to the Body of Christ. Notice the very first verse: “God… spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). The book of Hebrews deals with Israel’s New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31–34) and their priestly kingdom program. Under that program, salvation was tied to enduring in faith + works to the end (Matthew 24:13, James 2:24). That’s why Hebrews contains strong warnings about falling away.
🙌 John 10:28–29 is also in Israel’s program, but it looks forward to the assurance Israel will have in their Kingdom under the New Covenant, when God Himself will cause them to walk in His statutes (Ezekiel 36:26–27).
✨ But today, in the Dispensation of Grace revealed to Paul, we are not under Israel’s program. We are under the revelation of the mystery (Romans 16:25; Ephesians 3:1–9).
Paul clearly teaches that the believer in Christ today has eternal security by grace through faith:
✅ “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation… ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).
✅ “Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:8).
✅ “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life… shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38–39).
🔥 The Bottom Line:
• In Israel’s program (prophecy), salvation was tied to enduring faith + works under the New Covenant. Hence, warnings like Hebrews 6.
• In the Body of Christ (mystery), salvation is by grace through faith alone, and believers are eternally sealed by the Spirit.
💡 When we rightly divide, there is no contradiction at all. Hebrews is not written to us in this dispensation—Paul’s epistles are.
