Many people get confused when they read the Bible and see what looks like a contradiction:
👉 James 2:24 – “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”
👉 Romans 3:28 – “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
🤔 Which is it—faith plus works? Or faith alone?
The answer is found when we rightly divide the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
💡 James is writing to Israel, not the Body of Christ.
James 1:1 says his letter is addressed to “the twelve tribes scattered abroad.” His focus is Israel’s kingdom program, where faith had to be proved by works (cf. Matthew 19:17, Matthew 24:13). This is why James emphasizes works as the evidence of living faith.
✡️ In Israel’s prophetic program, works were required because the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31–34) demanded obedience, and their faith was shown by actions (offering sacrifices, keeping the Law, enduring to the end, etc.).
🙌 Paul, on the other hand, writes to the Gentiles in the Body of Christ.
Romans through Philemon reveal the mystery (Ephesians 3:1–9), a program not known to Israel’s prophets. In this present dispensation of grace, salvation is a free gift—received by grace through faith alone, without works (Ephesians 2:8–9; Titus 3:5).
⚖️ To mix James and Paul together is to confuse prophecy and mystery, Israel’s program and the Body of Christ, law and grace.
🔥 The bottom line:
• Israel (prophecy program): Faith plus works demonstrated their justification before men.
• Body of Christ (mystery program): Faith alone justifies us before God, apart from works.
When we rightly divide, there’s no contradiction at all! 🙏
