(A Look at Creation, Judgment, and God’s Purpose)
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
— Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
That verse is clear.
Simple.
Powerful.
Perfect.
God created…
And what He creates is not confusion.
“God is not the author of confusion…”
(1 Corinthians 14:33)
So then why does the very next verse say:
“And the earth was without form, and void…”
(Genesis 1:2)
What happened?
▪️A PERFECT BEGINNING
Genesis 1:1 shows us the original creation—
Complete.
Ordered.
Good.
God does not create chaos.
He creates with purpose.
He creates with design.
▪️A WORLD IN RUIN
But in verse 2, something is different.
• “Without form”
• “Void”
• Darkness upon the deep
This is not creation in progress.
This looks like judgment after destruction.
Something happened
between verse 1 and verse 2.
▪️THE FALL OF LUCIFER
Scripture gives us insight.
In passages like Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28,
we read about Lucifer—
• A created being of beauty and wisdom
• Given authority
• Lifted up in pride
And then—
Rebellion.
“I will ascend… I will exalt… I will be like the most High.”
(Isaiah 14:13–14)
Five “I wills.”
One fatal direction.
He chose himself over God.
▪️A JUDGMENT BEFORE GENESIS 1:2
With rebellion came judgment.
The idea presented is this:
Before Adam…
Before Eden…
There was a world affected by Lucifer’s fall.
A world that became:
• Broken
• Darkened
• Emptied
Not created that way—
But made that way through judgment.
▪️GOD BEGINS AGAIN—WITH PURPOSE
From that darkness…
God moves.
“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
(Genesis 1:2)
What follows is not the original creation—
But a restoration.
A preparing.
A reordering of the earth
for something new.
For man.
For a plan that would ultimately center in Christ.
▪️WHY THIS MATTERS
This isn’t just about the past.
It shows us something about God:
• He judges rebellion
• He does not ignore sin
• But He also restores with purpose
And more than that—
It reminds us:
There is a conflict behind the scenes.
A spiritual battle
that did not begin in Genesis 3…
But earlier.
▪️RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE BIGGER PICTURE
When we come to Paul’s epistles,
we learn something even greater:
God is now doing something
never before revealed.
“According to the revelation of the mystery…”
(Romans 16:25)
In time past—
There was creation… rebellion… judgment.
But now—
There is grace.
Not wrath.
Not destruction.
But reconciliation.
“God was in Christ… not imputing their trespasses unto them…”
(2 Corinthians 5:19)
▪️FROM RUIN TO REDEMPTION
Think about it:
• A world once ruined… restored
• A creation once judged… renewed
• A plan interrupted… now fulfilled in Christ
And today—
God is doing the same with people.
Taking lives broken by sin…
And offering something new.
Conclusion:
Genesis shows us:
God can bring order out of chaos.
Light out of darkness.
Purpose out of ruin.
And today—
Through the gospel of grace—
He is still doing that.
Because no matter how dark things seem…
God is always working toward restoration.
