In 2 Corinthians 8–9, Paul opens a window into how giving works in the dispensation of grace.
And it may surprise some people.
Under grace, giving is not a command.
It is not a percentage.
It is not a tithe.
Paul says plainly, “I speak not by commandment” (2 Cor. 8:8).
That matters.
Because today, we are not under Israel’s law system.
We are not under the covenant program.
We are members of the Body of Christ.
And grace changes everything.
▪️Grace Giving Is a Privilege
In this present dispensation:
• There is no mandated amount.
• There is no storehouse requirement.
• There is no compulsory percentage.
Instead, Paul says:
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
(2 Cor. 9:7)
Not grudgingly.
Not pressured.
Not manipulated.
But willingly.
Grace giving is voluntary.
It is Spirit-motivated.
It is love expressed.
▪️The Macedonian Pattern
Paul points to the churches of Macedonia — Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea.
They were not wealthy.
They were not comfortable.
They were not thriving materially.
They were persecuted.
Afflicted.
Deep in poverty.
And yet Scripture says:
“Their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.”
(2 Cor. 8:2)
Read that again.
Deep poverty.
Rich liberality.
They didn’t give because they had extra.
They gave because grace was working in them.
That is the key.
Grace was not just a doctrine they believed.
Grace was an energy operating in their hearts.
▪️Giving Proves Love
Paul calls giving a proving — a testing — of sincerity (2 Cor. 8:8).
Not a test of income.
A test of love.
Do we truly value the saints?
Do we truly care for the Body?
Do we truly understand what Christ has done for us?
Because the foundation of grace giving is this:
“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”
(2 Cor. 8:9)
That is the pattern.
Christ gave Himself.
Not by compulsion.
But willingly.
Not because He had to.
But because He loved.
Grace giving flows from Calvary.
▪️The Jerusalem Context — and the Principle Today
The specific collection Paul organized was for the poor saints at Jerusalem — believers who were suffering greatly.
That historical situation has passed.
But the principle remains.
We still:
• Bear one another’s burdens.
• Provide for saints in need.
• Support the ministry of the Word.
• Invest in eternal things.
Not to earn favor.
Not to keep a command.
Not to secure blessing.
But because grace has already blessed us.
Under Law: You Owe.
Under Grace: You Are Free.
And freedom, when understood, produces something greater than obligation ever could.
It produces:
• Willing hearts
• Cheerful giving
• Sacrificial love
When grace grips your heart,
giving is not forced.
It is natural.
It is joyful.
It is worship.
And that is Paul’s guide to grace giving.
Not law.
Not tithing.
Not pressure.
But grace working in a believer
who understands
how richly he has already been blessed in Christ.
