It’s one of the most common questions people ask.
And often, it’s asked with sincerity.
But sometimes… it’s asked hoping there’s a loophole.
So let’s slow down.
Let’s open the Scriptures.
Let’s rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15).
And let’s answer it carefully.
1. Man Knows There Is a God
The Bible does not begin with doubt.
It begins with declaration.
“The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).
Look up.
Creation preaches.
The sun, the stars, the order, the design — they speak without words. Paul says in Romans 1 that what may be known of God is manifest in them.
Not hidden.
Not secret.
Manifest.
“So that they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20).
Every culture.
Every language.
Every century.
Men suppress the truth — they don’t lack it (Rom. 1:18).
The problem is not ignorance of God’s existence.
The problem is rejection.
2. Man Has a Moral Compass
Even without the Law of Moses, Gentiles show “the work of the law written in their hearts” (Rom. 2:15).
Conscience.
Right and wrong.
Guilt and accountability.
No one teaches a child to lie — but they know when they have.
That inner witness is universal.
Not perfect.
Not saving.
But real.
Man knows there is a God.
Man knows he is accountable.
3. Man Knows Sin Deserves Judgment
Romans 1 goes even further.
It says men know “the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death” (Rom. 1:32).
Deep down, humanity understands:
Sin is serious.
Justice exists.
God is not indifferent.
The wrath of God is revealed against ungodliness (Rom. 1:18).
Again — not hidden.
Revealed.
4. So What About Those Who Haven’t Heard?
Here is where the objection surfaces:
“What about the person in a remote place who never heard the gospel of grace?”
Romans 10 answers the heart of it.
“How shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom. 10:14).
That’s not an excuse — it’s a commission.
Paul also says:
“Their sound went into all the earth” (Rom. 10:18).
There is a universal witness:
• Creation declares.
• Conscience convicts.
• God’s goodness leads men to repentance (Rom. 2:4).
And in this dispensation of grace:
“The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men” (Titus 2:11).
Not meaning all are saved —
but that salvation is not restricted to Israel anymore.
The gospel of the grace of God is for the world.
Jew and Gentile.
Near and far.
Religious and pagan.
▪️Accountability and Responsibility
Scripture never says people are condemned for rejecting a message they never heard.
They are condemned because they are sinners.
And today, salvation is through believing the gospel:
Christ died for our sins,
was buried,
and rose again (1 Cor. 15:1–4).
That message must be believed.
Which is why the question shouldn’t weaken missions —
it should ignite them.
If people need to hear…
Then we preach.
If faith comes by hearing…
Then we speak.
▪️Resting in God’s Character
Here’s what steadies the heart:
God is just.
God is righteous.
God is not unfair.
“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Gen. 18:25)
No one will stand before Him and say,
“You were unjust.”
At the same time, Scripture says clearly:
“Now is the accepted time; now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2).
Urgency is real.
Grace is available.
The door is open — now.
Man knows:
• There is a Creator.
• There is a moral law.
• There is judgment for sin.
And today, God has revealed the gospel of grace through the Apostle Paul.
Our role is not to search for exceptions.
Our role is to preach Christ.
Boldly.
Clearly.
Lovingly.
Because the question isn’t meant to create doubt.
It’s meant to create urgency.
Preach the gospel.
Trust the Lord.
Leave the judgment to Him.
