This question may surprise many sincere believers.
Ask the average churchgoer how many baptisms are for today, and you’ll often hear:
“Water baptism.”
“Spirit baptism.”
“Maybe both.”
Some churches make water baptism part of salvation.
Others treat it as a required step of obedience.
Still others mix Israel’s baptism program with Paul’s grace message.
But what does Scripture actually say?
Not tradition.
Not denomination.
Not church history.
What did the apostle of the Gentiles say?
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
—Romans 11:13 (KJV)
And Paul says something incredibly clear:
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
—Ephesians 4:5 (KJV)
One.
Not two.
Not multiple.
One baptism.
That should immediately force us to ask:
Which baptism is Paul talking about?
During Israel’s prophetic program, there were multiple baptisms.
John preached water baptism:
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance…”
—Matthew 3:11
The twelve practiced water baptism.
The Great Commission included water baptism.
Israel also experienced ceremonial washings and various baptisms under their kingdom program.
Hebrews 6:2 even refers to:
“the doctrine of baptisms”
Plural.
Why?
Because Israel’s prophetic program involved multiple baptisms.
But Paul says today there is one baptism.
Something changed.
And Paul makes another powerful statement:
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel…”
—1 Corinthians 1:17 (KJV)
That verse causes major problems for those who claim water baptism is required today.
Think about it:
If water baptism were essential for salvation…
Why would Christ specifically tell Paul NOT to make it central?
Because water baptism was not the centerpiece of the mystery program.
The gospel is.
So what is the “one baptism” for today?
Paul explains it clearly:
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…”
—1 Corinthians 12:13 (KJV)
This is not water.
This is not a ritual.
This is not a church ceremony.
This is the Holy Spirit placing believers into Christ the moment they trust the gospel.
The instant you believe:
• Christ died for your sins
• He was buried
• He rose again
(1 Corinthians 15:1–4)
The Holy Spirit baptizes you into the Body of Christ.
That’s the one baptism for today.
This baptism does something water never could.
It places you:
• In Christ
• Into His death
• Into His resurrection life
• Into the Body of Christ
• Into your heavenly identity
Paul says:
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?”
—Romans 6:3
This is identification truth.
You are united with Christ.
Complete in Him.
Accepted in Him.
Seated in heavenly places in Him.
Water can get your body wet.
But it cannot save your soul.
Water cannot forgive sins.
Water cannot place you into Christ.
Water cannot seal you until the day of redemption.
Only Christ can save.
Only His finished work is sufficient.
This is where confusion happens.
People mix:
• John’s baptism
• Pentecost baptism
• kingdom baptism
• Paul’s mystery truth
And when you fail to rightly divide, confusion grows.
Paul tells us plainly:
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.”
—2 Timothy 2:15
Right division protects the gospel.
Today, salvation is not:
Believe + baptism
Believe + ritual
Believe + church membership
Believe + works
It is faith alone in Christ alone.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith…”
—Ephesians 2:8–9
The one baptism for today is the spiritual baptism of the Holy Spirit placing believers into the Body of Christ.
No ceremony required.
No ritual needed.
No water involved.
Just complete trust in the finished work of Christ.
Stand in grace.
Rest in Christ.
And rejoice in your identity in Him.
