(A Grace Approach, Rightly Divided)
This is not an easy subject.
Leaving a church can be painful…
emotional…
even confusing.
But Scripture gives us clarity—
and grace gives us the right spirit.
▪️START WITH THE RIGHT FOCUS
Paul said:
“Whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice…”
— Philippians 1:18 (KJV)
That sets the tone.
It’s not about personalities.
It’s not about preferences.
It’s not about winning arguments.
It’s about Christ being preached.
Always.
▪️WHY WOULD SOMEONE LEAVE?
Not every reason is biblical.
But some are necessary.
There are times when you must stand—
• For sound doctrine (Philippians 2:15)
• Against serious error that corrupts the gospel
• When division undermines truth, not strengthens it
Grace does not mean compromise.
Truth still matters.
Doctrine still matters.
Right division still matters.
▪️BUT HOW YOU LEAVE… MATTERS JUST AS MUCH
Never forget—
The people you are leaving
are still members of the Body of Christ.
They are not your enemies.
So don’t tear them down
just to justify your exit.
No character attacks.
No bitterness.
No “spiritual superiority.”
Grace teaches us better.
▪️THE THREE SIMPLE GUIDELINES
When it is time to go:
• Leave quickly
Don’t linger in conflict
Don’t live in the past
• Leave quietly
No drama
No strife
No stirring up trouble
• Leave graciously
Forgive
Forbear
Keep your testimony clean
▪️DON’T LOOK BACK—LOOK FORWARD
Once you leave—
Move forward.
Serve Christ where you are planted next.
Don’t spend your time criticizing
what you walked away from.
Spend your time building
where God has placed you.
▪️A RIGHTLY DIVIDED REMINDER
The local church matters.
It is a functioning asset in God’s design for today.
But never forget—
The Body of Christ
does not belong to a man
a group
or a ministry.
It belongs to the Lord.
Conclusion:
Grace is not just what we believe—
It’s how we behave.
Especially when it’s hard.
Especially when we walk away.
So if the time comes—
Stand for truth.
Walk in grace.
Leave with dignity.
And keep your eyes on Christ.
Because in the end—
it’s not about where you left…
it’s about how faithfully you move forward.
