“If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ… from such withdraw thyself.”
— 1 Timothy 6:3–5 (KJV)
That sounds strong.
In a day that prizes tolerance above truth, Paul’s words can seem harsh.
But why would the Apostle of Grace write something like this?
Because grace does not ignore error.
Grace stands for truth.
▪️PAUL’S CONCERN WAS DOCTRINE
Paul was not telling Timothy to withdraw from every believer who disagreed on minor issues.
He was warning against teachers who refused to submit to sound doctrine and instead promoted error.
False doctrine is never harmless.
It confuses believers.
It corrupts the gospel.
It weakens the Church.
That is why Paul says:
“If any man teach otherwise… from such withdraw thyself.”
▪️ISRAEL VS THE BODY OF CHRIST
One reason there is so much confusion today is because many sincere teachers fail to distinguish Israel’s program from the Body of Christ.
Promises made to Israel are applied directly to the Church.
Kingdom doctrine is mixed with the Gospel of Grace.
Law is blended with Grace.
The result?
Confusion instead of clarity.
Paul reminds us:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
Romans 11:13 (KJV)
If Christ appointed Paul as the apostle of the Gentiles, then his epistles are the primary source of doctrine for the Church, the Body of Christ.
▪️PROPHECY VS MYSTERY
God’s prophetic program concerns Israel and her promised kingdom.
The Mystery concerns the heavenly Body of Christ.
When those two programs are mixed together, believers are often left trying to live under instructions God did not give to the Church.
Right division is not about dividing the Bible into pieces.
It is about recognizing the distinctions God Himself has made.
▪️LAW VS GRACE
Many religious systems combine grace with works.
Faith with rituals.
Christ with human performance.
Paul consistently opposes that mixture.
He calls believers to stand fast in the liberty of grace and to hold fast the doctrine committed to the Church.
Truth matters.
Doctrine matters.
Because what we believe shapes how we live.
▪️THE GOSPEL THAT SAVES TODAY
Above all, Paul never allowed anything to replace the Gospel.
He declared:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)
That is the Gospel of the Grace of God.
Not religion.
Not tradition.
Not denominational loyalty.
Christ crucified.
Buried.
Risen again.
Believe Him.
Trust Him.
Rest in His finished work.
▪️WITHDRAWING IS ABOUT PROTECTING THE TRUTH
Paul’s instruction is not rooted in pride.
It is rooted in love for the truth.
• Love for the gospel.
• Love for sound doctrine.
• Love for believers who deserve to hear God’s Word without confusion.
Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is refuse to give false teaching a platform.
Truth and error cannot be treated as equals.
▪️THE BLESSED CONCLUSION
The Apostle of Grace was also the Apostle who repeatedly warned against false doctrine.
He loved people enough to tell them the truth.
He guarded the gospel.
He defended sound doctrine.
He urged believers to do the same.
When we rightly divide:
• Israel and the Body of Christ.
• Prophecy and Mystery.
• Law and Grace.
The Scriptures become clear, and the Gospel shines brightly.
Stand for the truth.
Preach Christ according to the revelation of the Mystery.
And as Paul instructed Timothy,
“If any man teach otherwise… from such withdraw thyself.”
