WHY DID PAUL RECEIVE A DIFFERENT COMMISSION
“NOT TO BAPTIZE”? (1 Corinthians 1:17)
Paul’s words are startling.
They interrupt our assumptions.
They force us to slow down and ask the necessary question:
If the Church today is under the Great Commission…
why was Paul sent NOT to do one of its central commands?
▪️A NECESSARY QUESTION
Jesus commanded the apostles in Matthew 28:
• “Go…”
• “Teach all nations…”
• “Baptizing them…” (Matt. 28:19)
Water baptism wasn’t optional.
It wasn’t secondary.
It wasn’t cultural.
It was central to Israel’s kingdom commission.
So why does Paul say:
“Christ sent me NOT to baptize, but to preach the gospel…”
— 1 Corinthians 1:17
Something has changed.
Something has shifted.
Something new has begun.
And it demands our attention.
▪️TWO COMMISSIONS — TWO PROGRAMS
The Great Commission belonged to Israel’s kingdom program.
Paul’s commission belongs to the revelation of the Mystery.
These are not competing ministries.
They are not contradictions.
They are two divine programs unfolding in God’s perfect order.
👉 Israel’s Commission (Matthew 28; Mark 16):
• Water baptism required
• Signs and wonders promised
• Nations blessed through Israel
• A kingdom offered on earth
• Twelve apostles sent
• Prophecy being fulfilled
✅ Paul’s Commission (Acts 9; Acts 20; Romans 11; Ephesians 3):
• No water baptism requirement
• No guarantee of signs
• Salvation sent to all, apart from Israel
• A heavenly calling
• One apostle sent to the Gentiles
• Mystery revealed
You cannot mix these two programs without confusion.
You cannot blend the instructions without distortion.
What God separated, we must not force together.
▪️PAUL’S CLARITY — “NOT TO BAPTIZE”
Paul doesn’t say baptism is wrong.
He doesn’t dismiss the practice.
He simply explains:
It is not part of the message he was sent to preach.
Why?
Because in the dispensation of grace:
• Salvation is without works (Eph. 2:8–9)
• Without rituals
• Without Israel’s ceremonies
• Without priestly mediators
• Without water requirements
• Without kingdom signs
Grace leaves no room for rituals to express salvation.
Grace stands alone.
To add water is to blur the gospel.
To require baptism is to mix programs.
To confuse commissions is to cloud the cross.
Paul’s ministry was to make the gospel unmistakably clear:
“Lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.”
— 1 Corinthians 1:17
▪️THE CROSS IS ENOUGH
Under Israel’s program, baptism expressed repentance and cleansing.
Under the Mystery, the cross stands complete.
The believer is:
• Forgiven by Christ’s blood
• Accepted in the Beloved
• Baptized by the Spirit into the Body (1 Cor. 12:13)
• Complete in Christ (Col. 2:10)
• Made alive with Him (Eph. 2:5)
This baptism—Spirit baptism—is the only one Paul preaches as essential.
It is not performed by human hands.
It is the operation of God (Col. 2:12).
Water cannot add to that.
Ritual cannot supply what grace freely gives.
Nothing can improve the finished work of Christ.
▪️SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?
It means something very simple, very freeing, and very important:
Our commission is Paul’s commission.
Our message is Paul’s gospel.
Our identity is found in Christ, not in ceremonies.
We:
• Preach Christ crucified
• Teach the gospel of grace
• Make all men see the fellowship of the Mystery (Eph. 3:9)
• Stand fast in liberty
• Glory in the cross
• Walk worthy of our heavenly calling
This is our mission.
This is our stewardship.
This is our apostolic authority for today.
▪️Conclusion:
You do not need water to be complete in Christ.
You do not need rituals to be accepted by God.
You do not need ceremonies to seal your salvation.
You need the cross.
You need the gospel.
You need Christ.
What He finished, we rest in.
What He revealed to Paul, we stand in.
What He works in us by grace, we live out.
So preach Christ with clarity.
Preach grace with confidence.
Preach Paul’s gospel without hesitation.
Because God has given you a commission too—
A commission rooted not in ritual,
But in revelation…
Not in water,
But in grace…
Not in a kingdom on earth,
But in a calling from heaven.
And that message must be made known.
