Why Does Paul Say We’re Sealed Until the Day of Redemption?
“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
— Ephesians 4:30 (KJV)
Have you ever been told,
• “You have to endure to the end to stay saved.”
• “If you don’t persevere, you’ll lose your salvation.”
• “Your eternal security depends on your endurance.”
Those statements sound convincing.
But do they fit with Paul’s message to the Body of Christ?
Only if we ignore right division.
▪️TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS
One of the biggest causes of confusion is taking passages from Israel’s prophetic program and applying them directly to the Body of Christ.
Jesus said:
“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
Matthew 24:13 (KJV)
Who was He speaking to?
The context is Israel during the future Tribulation.
Matthew 24 is not written about the Church, the Body of Christ.
It concerns Israel’s prophetic kingdom program.
▪️ISRAEL VS THE BODY OF CHRIST
Israel’s program includes the Tribulation, the Second Coming, and the earthly kingdom.
The Body of Christ belongs to a different program—a Mystery that had been hidden until it was revealed to Paul.
Paul writes:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
Romans 11:13 (KJV)
If we want to know God’s instructions for the Church today, we must listen to the apostle Christ appointed for this present dispensation.
▪️PROPHECY VS MYSTERY
Prophecy spoke of Israel’s future.
The Mystery reveals God’s heavenly purpose for the Body of Christ.
When we confuse those two programs, verses that belong to Israel are used to cast doubt on the believer’s assurance.
But when we rightly divide the Scriptures, each passage fits perfectly where God intended.
▪️WHAT DOES PAUL SAY?
Paul never tells believers in the Body of Christ to endure in order to keep their salvation.
Instead, he says:
“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
Ephesians 4:30 (KJV)
Notice what the verse does not say.
It does not say:
• Sealed until your next serious sin.
• Sealed if you endure long enough.
• Sealed as long as you perform faithfully.
It says:
• Sealed unto the day of redemption.
That seal is God’s work—not yours.
▪️LAW VS GRACE
Under a performance-based system, assurance depends on the believer.
Under Grace, assurance rests on Christ.
God is the One who saves.
God is the One who seals.
God is the One who guarantees the believer’s future.
That is why Paul also writes:
“In whom ye also trusted… after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”
Ephesians 1:13 (KJV)
The seal comes after believing the gospel—not after proving your endurance.
▪️THE GOSPEL THAT SAVES TODAY
Paul declares the gospel plainly:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)
Our salvation is based on Christ’s finished work.
Not our endurance.
Not our consistency.
Not our ability to hold on to Him.
But His ability to hold on to us.
▪️DON’T CONFUSE THE PASSAGES
Matthew 24:13 belongs in Israel’s prophetic program.
Ephesians 4:30 belongs to the Body of Christ.
One speaks of enduring through the Tribulation.
The other speaks of believers who are already sealed until the day of redemption.
When we fail to rightly divide, these passages seem to contradict each other.
When we rightly divide, they harmonize beautifully.
▪️THE BLESSED CONCLUSION
If you have trusted Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for your salvation,
• You are justified by faith.
• You are sealed by the Holy Spirit.
• You are complete in Christ.
• You are secure until the day of redemption.
The believer’s confidence is not in his endurance.
The believer’s confidence is in God’s faithfulness.
Right division doesn’t weaken assurance.
It strengthens it.
Grace doesn’t leave you wondering if you’ll make it.
Grace assures you that God will finish what He has begun in every believer who has trusted Christ alone.
