It’s an honest question.
A sincere question.
And an important one.
Because many believers have been told:
• “Repent or you’re not saved.”
• “Be baptized or you’re not forgiven.”
• “Do more… try harder… clean yourself up first…”
But when fear drives salvation, grace disappears.
So let’s slow down.
Let’s open the Scriptures.
Let’s rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
Not tradition.
Not religion.
Not church history.
The Bible.
▪️WHAT DID PETER PREACH?
On Pentecost, Peter stood before Israel and said:
“Repent, and be baptized every one of you… for the remission of sins.”
— Acts 2:38
Notice the setting.
• Israel
• Jerusalem
• The last days of prophecy
• The kingdom “at hand”
Peter wasn’t starting the Body of Christ.
He was calling the nation to repent for rejecting their Messiah.
It was a kingdom message.
It was prophetic.
It was water baptism connected with national cleansing.
It was true.
But it was not written to us today.
Because something changed.
God revealed a mystery.
▪️THEN GOD RAISED UP PAUL
Enter Paul.
Not prophecy.
Not the kingdom.
Not Israel’s program.
But the revelation of the mystery (Romans 16:25).
And listen carefully to what Paul says:
“Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel.”
— 1 Corinthians 1:17
If baptism were required for salvation today…
Paul could never say that.
Never.
Instead he declares:
“By grace are ye saved through faith… not of works.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9
Notice what’s missing.
• No water
• No ritual
• No ceremony
• No performance
Just grace.
Just faith.
Just Christ.
▪️WHAT DOES “REPENT” MEAN TODAY?
Repentance confuses many people.
They think it means:
• cry harder
• promise better behavior
• clean up your life first
But biblically?
Repent simply means a change of mind.
Today that change is:
• from trusting self → to trusting Christ
• from works → to grace
• from religion → to the cross
“God… now commandeth all men every where to repent.”
— Acts 17:30
Repent of unbelief.
Believe the gospel.
That’s it.
▪️THE GOSPEL THAT SAVES TODAY
Paul defines it clearly — no mystery, no additions:
“Christ died for our sins…
was buried…
and rose again the third day.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:1–4
That’s the gospel.
Not:
• Christ + water
• Christ + law
• Christ + works
Because:
“If by grace, then is it no more of works.”
— Romans 11:6
Grace plus anything
is no longer grace.
▪️WHAT ABOUT BAPTISM?
Israel had water baptism.
But today?
“By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:13
Not water.
Spirit baptism.
Done by God.
Not by a preacher.
Not by a church.
Not by your effort.
The moment you believe.
Instant.
Complete.
Eternal.
▪️THE REST OF GRACE
Here’s the beauty of it.
You don’t have to:
• fear missing a step
• wonder if you did enough
• question if you said the right prayer
• depend on rituals
You simply rest.
Rest in Christ’s finished work.
Rest in His blood.
Rest in His grace.
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God.”
— Romans 5:1
Peace.
Not pressure.
Peace.
▪️THE ANSWER — CLEAR AND SIMPLE
So is
“Repent and be baptized”
the same as
“Believe and be saved”?
No.
Different programs.
Different audiences.
Different dispensations.
Today salvation is:
• by grace
• through faith
• without works
• without water
• secured forever in Christ
That’s not religion.
That’s good news.
That’s the gospel of the grace of God.
And that message sets people free.
