— What Is Jesus Really Talking About?
(Matthew 24:39–42)
When we read Matthew 24, we must slow down.
We must breathe.
We must rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
Because not every “taking” in Scripture is the Rapture.
And not every promise belongs to the Body of Christ.
In Matthew 24, Jesus is not describing the catching away of the Church.
He is describing the Second Coming — His return to the earth to establish the Kingdom promised to Israel.
Let Scripture interpret Scripture.
Jesus says:
“And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away…” (Matthew 24:39)
Who were “taken” in Noah’s day?
The righteous?
No.
The ones swept away were the unbelievers — taken in judgment.
That is the pattern.
That is the context.
That is the key.
So when verse 40 says:
“Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left,”
the taking is not rescue —
it is removal in judgment.
Just like Luke 17 confirms.
Just like the days of Noah.
Taken = judgment.
Left = entering the Kingdom.
That is not the Rapture of 1 Thessalonians 4.
That is not the mystery revealed to Paul.
That is prophecy — not mystery.
And context matters.
Matthew 24 is spoken:
• During Christ’s earthly ministry to Israel (Romans 15:8)
• On the Mount of Olives — the very place He will return (Zechariah 14:4)
• In response to Israel’s prophetic expectations
This chapter concerns:
• The tribulation
• The sign of the Son of Man
• The gathering of Israel’s elect (Matthew 24:31)
Not the Body of Christ.
The “elect” in this chapter are not the Church.
They are believing Israel — preserved through tribulation and gathered into the Kingdom.
And the fig tree?
It is not 1948.
It is not modern geopolitics.
In Scripture, the fig tree pictures Israel’s religious life (see Matthew 21:19).
The vine speaks of national life.
The fig tree speaks of spiritual fruit.
Again — prophecy, not mystery.
We must remember:
The Church, the Body of Christ, was still a mystery at that time (Ephesians 3:1–9).
It had not yet been revealed.
It was not the subject of Christ’s Olivet discourse.
If we place the Rapture in Matthew 24,
we blur prophecy and mystery.
We mix Israel and the Church.
We lose clarity.
But when we rightly divide —
Everything falls into place.
• Matthew 24 = Israel’s prophetic program
• 1 Thessalonians 4 = the mystery of the Rapture
• One is earthly and Kingdom-focused
• The other is heavenly and Body-focused
Different audiences.
Different timing.
Different hope.
And that distinction protects our peace.
Because our hope is not in surviving tribulation.
Our hope is not in watching signs.
Our hope is “that blessed hope” (Titus 2:13).
We are not waiting for the Antichrist.
We are waiting for Christ.
Right division does not complicate the Bible.
It clarifies it.
It doesn’t divide believers.
It divides programs.
And when we see that,
Matthew 24 becomes powerful —
not confusing.
Stand firm in grace.
Study with humility.
Let Scripture say what it says.
And rejoice —
because our calling is heavenly,
our salvation is secure,
and our gathering is still future.
