“For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?”

What gave Paul the greatest joy?
Was it buildings?
Was it popularity?
Was it religious success?
No.
It was people.
People who had believed the gospel.
People who had been established in the grace of God.
People who would one day stand with him in the presence of Christ.
▪️PAUL’S HEART FOR BELIEVERS
Paul calls the Thessalonian believers his:
• Hope
• Joy
• Crown of rejoicing
Why?
Because they were living proof that the gospel of grace had transformed lives.
Nothing brought Paul greater joy than seeing people trust Christ and grow in His grace.
▪️ISRAEL VS THE BODY OF CHRIST
This passage is written to the Church, the Body of Christ.
Paul reminds us:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
Romans 11:13 (KJV)
As the apostle of the Gentiles, Paul was entrusted with God’s message for this present Dispensation of Grace.
His ministry was centered on building up the Body of Christ—not establishing Israel’s kingdom.
▪️PROPHECY VS MYSTERY
Under prophecy, God’s program focused on Israel and the promised earthly kingdom.
But through the revelation of the Mystery, God revealed something previously hidden:
A heavenly people.
A new creation.
The Body of Christ.
Paul rejoiced because these believers were part of that heavenly calling.
His joy was not in earthly accomplishments.
His joy was in seeing God’s grace produce eternal fruit.
▪️LAW VS GRACE
Religion often measures success by:
• Numbers.
• Buildings.
• Programs.
• Traditions.
Grace measures success differently.
Paul measured his ministry by transformed lives.
Believers established in sound doctrine.
Saints growing in Christ.
That was his crown of rejoicing.
▪️THE GOSPEL THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE
None of those believers became Paul’s joy because of religious works.
They became his joy because they believed the gospel.
Paul reminds us:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)
That message still saves today.
Not church membership.
Not religious ceremonies.
Not personal merit.
Christ’s finished work alone.
▪️WHAT ABOUT US?
Paul’s example challenges every believer.
What brings us joy?
Temporary success?
Earthly recognition?
Or seeing people come to know Christ and become established in His grace?
Investing in people has eternal value.
Sharing the gospel has eternal value.
Teaching sound doctrine has eternal value.
One day, those who have trusted Christ will stand together in His presence.
What a day that will be.
▪️THE BLESSED CONCLUSION
Paul’s greatest treasure was not something he possessed.
It was people whose lives had been changed by the gospel of grace.
May we have that same perspective.
May our greatest joy be seeing men and women trust Christ, grow in His grace, and stand complete in Him.
Because when Christ gathers the Body of Christ unto Himself, faithful gospel ministry will be seen for what it truly is:
An eternal investment in people.
People are not interruptions to ministry.
People are the ministry.
