Our hope is not earthly improvement,
but heavenly glory.
(Romans 8:18; Colossians 1:27)
That one sentence changes everything.
We live in a world obsessed with fixing the system.
Reforming culture.
Improving society.
Building something better down here.
But Paul does not point the Body of Christ to earthly renovation.
He points us upward.
▪️The Present Is Not the Promise
Romans 8:18 says:
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Notice the contrast:
• Present sufferings
• Future glory
Not improved circumstances.
Not gradual transformation of the world system.
Glory.
Revealed in us.
Paul does not deny suffering.
He explains it.
We are not promised comfort in this age.
We are promised glory in the next.
That is pure grace doctrine.
▪️The Mystery Hope
Colossians 1:27 defines it clearly:
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Not Christ reforming the kingdoms of this world.
Not Christ sitting on David’s throne today.
But Christ in you.
That is mystery truth.
That is the distinctive hope of the Body of Christ.
Israel’s hope?
An earthly kingdom.
A restored nation.
The Messiah reigning in Jerusalem.
Our hope?
Heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3).
A glorified body (Philippians 3:20–21).
Union with Christ above.
Different program.
Different calling.
Different sphere of glory.
Rightly divided, the Bible becomes clear.
▪️Why This Matters
If your hope is earthly improvement:
• You will be discouraged.
• You will be distracted.
• You will be disillusioned.
Because this world system is not being redeemed right now.
It is waxing worse and worse (2 Timothy 3:13).
But if your hope is heavenly glory:
• You endure suffering differently.
• You see trials differently.
• You live strategically.
You stop asking,
“How can I fix the world?”
And you start asking,
“How can I be faithful to my heavenly calling?”
▪️The Pattern of Grace
Under prophecy, the Kingdom comes to earth.
Under the mystery, we are seated in heavenly places in Christ (Ephesians 2:6).
Under prophecy, the nations are subdued.
Under grace, we are ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20).
We are not sent to take over.
We are sent to testify.
Not to establish the Kingdom.
But to proclaim reconciliation.
That shift changes everything.
▪️The Anchor of the Soul
“Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Not hope of comfort.
Not hope of influence.
Not hope of earthly triumph.
Hope of glory.
Future.
Certain.
Guaranteed.
And because it is guaranteed, we can:
• Suffer patiently.
• Serve faithfully.
• Preach boldly.
• Endure joyfully.
The sufferings are temporary.
The glory is eternal.
The present groans.
The future shines.
And one day—
this mortal shall put on immortality.
That is our hope.
Not earthly improvement.
Heavenly glory.
Stand in it.
Live from it.
Preach it.
