Many believers read Matthew 16 and immediately assume Peter is the foundation of the church today.
But is that what the Bible actually says?
Did Christ build the Body of Christ on Peter?
Or did He reveal a different ministry, message, and pattern through the apostle Paul?
This is where right division matters.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
When we rightly divide the Scriptures, confusion begins to disappear.
• Peter had a ministry.
• Paul had a ministry.
• Both served Christ.
• But they were not sent with the same message or commission.
▪️ PETER AND THE KINGDOM PROGRAM
In Matthew 16:18–19, the Lord Jesus said unto Peter:
• “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church… And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven…” — Matthew 16:18–19 KJV
Peter was given the keys of the kingdom.
Those keys were connected to Israel’s prophetic program — the earthly kingdom promised since the world began.
Peter used those keys:
• In Acts 2 — opening the kingdom message to Israel
• In Acts 3 — calling Israel to repentance
• In Acts 10 — opening the door to Cornelius and the Gentiles
But notice carefully:
Peter preached the kingdom to Israel.
He was never called “the masterbuilder” of the Body of Christ.
His ministry belonged to prophecy.
▪️PAUL AND THE MYSTERY PROGRAM
Now compare that with what Paul says:
“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation…” — 1 Corinthians 3:10 KJV
Paul alone uses the title “wise masterbuilder.”
Why?
Because Christ revealed something to Paul that had been hidden in ages past.
“The mystery, which in other ages was not made known…” — Ephesians 3:5 KJV
This was not Israel’s kingdom program.
This was the revelation of the Body of Christ — a heavenly people blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places.
• Israel had earthly promises
• The Body of Christ has heavenly promises
• Israel’s program was prophetic
• The Body of Christ was a mystery
• Peter ministered circumcision truth
• Paul was the apostle of the Gentiles (Romans 11:13)
Both ministries were real.
Both were biblical.
But they were not the same.
▪️ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE MIX THE TWO?
When believers fail to rightly divide the Word, confusion follows.
Suddenly people begin mixing:
• Law with grace
• Israel with the Church
• Prophecy with mystery
• Earthly promises with heavenly calling
That confusion produces:
• Legalism
• Contradictory doctrines
• Gospel confusion
• Religious performance instead of resting in Christ
Peter preached repentance and water baptism in Acts 2.
Paul later said:
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel…” — 1 Corinthians 1:17 KJV
Why the difference?
Because the dispensation changed.
The risen Christ revealed a new administration of grace through Paul.
▪️THE GOSPEL FOR TODAY
Paul declares plainly:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day…” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 KJV
That is the gospel of the grace of God.
Not law.
Not rituals.
Not religious performance.
Salvation today is by grace through faith alone in the finished work of Christ.
“Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:9 KJV
The believer today is placed into Christ, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and given a heavenly calling.
This is why Paul says:
“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 11:1 KJV
Not because Paul replaces Christ —
but because Christ revealed His heavenly ministry for today through Paul.
▪️THE CONCLUSION
Christ is the only true foundation.
But Paul is the wise masterbuilder of the church which is His Body in this present Dispensation of Grace.
• Peter — Kingdom — Israel — Prophecy
• Paul — Grace — Body of Christ — Mystery
Both are true.
Both belong in your Bible.
But they are not the same program.
If you want clarity instead of confusion…
If you want grace instead of bondage…
If you want to understand your identity in Christ…
Then you must rightly divide the Word of truth.
“Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.” — 2 Timothy 2:7 KJV
