— And United In One Body
Have you ever slowed down long enough to truly think about the word “reconcile”?
It’s one of those beautiful Bible terms that carries an entire world of doctrine inside it.
To reconcile simply means to bring back together, to restore, to make peace where division once existed.
And the more you study Paul’s epistles, the more you realize this is at the heart of everything God is doing today in the dispensation of grace.
THE TWO GREAT BARRIERS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
When Paul explains reconciliation in Ephesians 2, he shows us that humanity faces two kinds of separation from God:
1. Personal Separation (Eph. 2:1–10)
Every individual—Jew or Gentile—stands spiritually dead because of sin. We aren’t sinners because we sin; we sin because we are sinners. Our nature is fallen. We’re born “children of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2–3), spiritually lifeless and incapable of bridging the gulf between us and God.
Isaiah said it long ago:
“Your iniquities have separated between you and your God…” (Isa. 59:2)
That’s the barrier of sins—the wall we cannot climb, the chasm we cannot cross.
2. Dispensational Separation (Eph. 2:11–15)
Even if an individual understood their need to be reconciled, there was a time when God had placed a national barrier in the way.
In time past, Gentiles were “far off.” Israel alone had the covenants, promises, and access to God (Eph. 2:12; Rom. 9:4–5).
If a Gentile wanted to come to God, it had to be through Israel.
But something changed.
Something huge.
THE CROSS REMOVED BOTH BARRIERS
Paul declares:
“…that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross…” —Ephesians 2:16
Everything turns on that phrase: by the cross.
✔ The Cross answers our sin.
Christ didn’t just die for what we’ve done—He died for what we are.
“Christ died for the ungodly.” (Rom. 5:6) “Christ died for our sins.” (1 Cor. 15:3)
He became sin for us (2 Cor. 5:21), absorbing the wrath we deserved.
Through that death, God can righteously move us from darkness to light, from death to life, from enemies to sons.
✔ The Cross also changed the program.
God temporarily set Israel aside (Rom. 11:11–15, 25) and opened a new dispensation—one where Jew and Gentile stand on the exact same ground.
No favored nation.
No covenantal privilege.
No “middle wall of partition” (Eph. 2:14).
ONE NEW MAN — ONE NEW BODY
God is now forming a new, unprophesied, spiritual entity:
THE CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST
(Eph. 2:15; Eph. 3:1–6; 1 Cor. 12:12–13)
Every person—no matter their background—enters this Body the same way:
Not by ceremonies.
Not by sacraments.
Not by water.
Not by religious performance.
But by the Spirit, the moment they trust the finished work of Christ.
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…” —1 Corinthians 12:13
The only baptism that places you into Christ today is the Spirit’s baptism, not water.
Water cannot unite you to Christ. Only the Holy Spirit can identify you into His death, burial, and resurrection (Rom. 6:3–4).
This is why Mid-Acts teachers insist that the “one baptism” of Ephesians 4:5 is spiritual, not physical.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR DAILY WALK
• Because we’ve all come to God the same way—through the cross—we share a unity deeper than culture, personality, politics, or background.
• We’re members of one another (Rom. 12:5).
• We share one life—Christ’s life (Col. 3:3–4).
• We stand in one position—complete in Him (Col. 2:10).
And Paul adds something astonishing:
• We have access.
“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” —Ephesians 2:18
Access means the Spirit takes us by the hand (through His Word) and leads us into a real, conscious understanding of who we are in Christ and what God has freely given us.
Nothing mystical.
Nothing emotional.
Nothing religious.
Just by faith in the truth God has revealed.
“By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand…” —Romans 5:2
What a staggering reality…
Enemies turned into sons.
Strangers made fellow heirs.
Outcasts placed into a heavenly Body.
Divided peoples made one.
All by the cross.
If you’ve trusted Christ, you’re part of this new creation God is forming today.
Not because of who you are, but because of what Christ accomplished.
Not because of your performance, but because of His grace.
Not because of your religion, but because of His revelation.
Glory in the cross.
Understand the mystery.
Walk worthy of your calling.
