Romans 9 — Israel’s Fall, A Remnant, and Rightly Dividing the Word

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

Sometimes Romans 9 confuses people.

They read Paul quoting Hosea… Isaiah… Peter’s language…
and they wonder:

“Is this the Church?”
“Is this the Body of Christ?”
“Are we spiritual Israel?”

But when you slow down…
and rightly divide…
everything becomes clear.

Not complicated.
Just contextual.

Always context.

▪️What is Paul doing in Romans 9:25–29?

Paul isn’t redefining Israel.

He isn’t replacing Israel.

He isn’t turning the Church into prophecy.

He’s doing something simpler:

He’s proving from Israel’s own Scriptures that their fall was foretold.

Their rejection wasn’t a surprise.

God already said it would happen.

▪️The prophets already warned Israel

Paul quotes:

• Hosea
• Isaiah

To show two truths:

1. Israel would stumble and fall nationally
2. Only a small remnant would be saved

Just like Jesus called them:

👉 “Fear not, little flock…” (Luke 12:32)

Not the whole nation.
Not the crowds.
A remnant.

A believing minority.

That was always the pattern.

▪️But here’s where many miss it…

Those prophecies are NOT about the Body of Christ.

And this matters.

Because the Church today was:

• not prophesied
• not spoken by the prophets
• not “since the world began”

Paul says it plainly:

👉 “The mystery… kept secret since the world began” (Rom. 16:25)
👉 “Hid in God” (Eph. 3:9)

If it was spoken by Hosea and Isaiah…

It’s prophecy.

Not mystery.

Not us.

▪️What about 1 Peter 2?

People often quote:

• chosen generation
• royal priesthood
• holy nation

…and say, “That’s the Church!”

But wait.

Those titles belong to Israel (Exodus 19:5–6).

Peter wasn’t writing to Gentiles becoming the Body of Christ.

He was writing to believing Jews scattered among the nations.

Kingdom saints.
Kingdom promises.
Kingdom language.

Still prophecy.
Still Israel.

So what is Paul doing?

Here’s the beautiful balance.

Paul isn’t stealing Israel’s promises.

He’s showing:

👉 God has always worked through a believing remnant.

And during Acts…

Some Jews believed Paul’s gospel of grace.

Those Jews didn’t become “Israel 2.0”

They became something brand new:

👉 The Body of Christ

Not prophecy fulfilled.

But mystery revealed.

▪️The key difference

This changes everything:

PROPHECY
→ spoken since the world began
→ Israel
→ earthly kingdom
→ covenants and promises

MYSTERY
→ kept secret since the world began
→ Body of Christ
→ heavenly calling
→ pure grace

Two programs.
One Bible.
Rightly divided.

▪️Why this matters

When you don’t divide rightly:

You steal promises that aren’t yours
You miss blessings that are yours
You mix law with grace
You lose clarity

But when you divide rightly?

The Bible shines.

You see:

• Israel as Israel
• the Church as the Body
• prophecy as prophecy
• mystery as mystery

No confusion.

Just harmony.

▪️Conclusion:

Beloved…

You are not trying to become Israel.

You are not waiting for a kingdom on earth.

You are already:

• blessed with all spiritual blessings
• accepted in the Beloved
• complete in Christ
• seated in heavenly places

That’s not prophecy.

That’s grace.

That’s mystery.

That’s Paul’s gospel.

And when you see it…

Romans finally makes sense.

And your heart rests.

Right division doesn’t complicate the Bible.

It clears it.

Always has.
Always will.
