One of the enemy’s oldest strategies has never been to make believers stop being “religious” —
but to move them away from sound doctrine.
Paul warns us of “the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11).
Wiles means strategies… clever tricks… subtle moves.
The tactic is simple:
Move your faith from what God has said,
to what man thinks, feels, or invents.
When truth is replaced with human viewpoint, something else always rises in its place:
a religious system built on human righteousness instead of God’s grace.
▪️THE RISE OF A RELIGIOUS SUBSTITUTE
When people reject God’s Word, they don’t become less religious —
they become more religious.
They begin to:
• establish their own righteousness
• create their own ceremonies
• build their own altars
• invent their own mediators
• seek their own glory
This isn’t new. It began early, and Scripture gives it a name:
👉 Mystery Babylon (Rev. 17–18)
A system that is:
— political
— commercial
— religious
— and global
It doesn’t simply oppose God from the outside…
it counterfeits God from the inside.
▪️THE CHARACTER OF THE SYSTEM
The Bible describes this system with striking detail:
• connected to a great city (Rev. 17:18)
• adorned in purple and scarlet (Rev. 17:4)
• holding a golden cup (Rev. 17:4)
• wealthy, powerful, and arrogant (Rev. 18:3,7)
• claiming queenly status (Rev. 18:7)
• persecuting the saints (Rev. 17:6)
• mother of many religious offspring (Rev. 17:5)
It blends government, religion, and commerce into one seductive package.
And above all — it is deeply religious… but without truth.
It prays, but not according to the gospel.
It worships, but replaces Christ with images and mediators.
It speaks of sacrifice, but ignores the one sacrifice that worked (Heb. 10:10–14).
▪️THE “QUEEN OF HEAVEN” AND THE COUNTERFEIT WORSHIP
Jeremiah speaks of a figure called the Queen of Heaven (Jer. 7:18; 44:17–19).
Throughout history she appears under different names across cultures.
Different name… same error:
a feminine mediator replacing the one Mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5).
Along with her came practices such as:
• incense
• shrines
• images
• special titles for priests
• long robes and vestments
• altars and ceremonies
• ritual eating and drinking in worship
Religion becomes rich, beautiful, and emotional —
but empty of sound doctrine.
▪️THE REAL TARGET: YOUR MIND AND YOUR WALK
Paul wasn’t merely warning about being unequally yoked in marriage or business.
He was warning about being yoked to a religious system that neutralizes God’s Word in your life (2 Cor. 6:14–18).
Not by denying God… but by mixing God’s truth with man’s ideas.
Error rarely runs at you with horns and darkness —
it comes with candles, altars, vestments, incense, and Scripture quotations.
▪️THE CALL OF THE BODY OF CHRIST
Paul’s exhortation is simple:
Return to sound doctrine.
Stand in grace.
Rest in Christ’s finished work.
We don’t fight Satan with emotion, ceremony, or “religious feelings.”
We stand with what God has already given us in Christ (Eph. 1:3).
And this is why sound doctrine matters.
Because if Satan can’t take your salvation,
he will gladly take your walk, your peace, and your discernment.
Don’t let him.
