“Seeking Those Things Which Are Above”?

Seeking Those Things Which Are Above

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

Paul doesn’t just tell us to “seek those things which are above” in Colossians 3
He shows us what they are, why they matter, and how they shape our identity right now.

Let’s slow down and walk through it.

▪️1. God Wants Us to Know His Will

So many believers today are waiting for God to whisper a hidden plan for their personal life…

But Paul says God has already revealed His will in Scripture.
Not bits and pieces. Not partial. Revealed.

“Having made known unto us the mystery of His will…” (Eph. 1:9)

God doesn’t leave the Body of Christ in the dark.

His purpose is no longer a secret.

▪️2. Christ Was Raised for a Heavenly Ministry

Israel was promised a King, a kingdom, and an earthly restoration.

But when Christ rose, He wasn’t only Israel’s King —
He became the Head of the Church, the Body of Christ.

“…and gave Him to be the Head over all things to the church…” (Eph. 1:22)

A heavenly calling.
A heavenly position.
A heavenly destiny.

This is what it means to “seek those things which are above.”

▪️3. The Spirit Gives Understanding — Not More Spirit

When Paul prays for believers to have a “spirit of wisdom and revelation,”
he’s not praying for more Holy Ghost to be poured out.

We’re already sealed, indwelt, complete (Eph. 1:13; Col. 2:10).

He’s praying for our mindset to catch up to our position.

For our understanding to be shaped by truth instead of feelings.

▪️4. God’s Eternal Plan: Heaven + Earth United in Christ

Before creation ever existed, God had a purpose:

“That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ…” (Eph. 1:10)

One universe.
Two realms.
Both reconciled in Christ.

Israel = Christ’s instrument to reclaim the earthly realm.
Body of Christ = Christ’s instrument to reclaim the heavenly realm.

Not the same.
Not competing.
Both essential in God’s plan.

▪️5. Why All This Matters to You

The universe is run by government.

Thrones. Dominions. Principalities. Powers. (Col. 1:16)

They’ve been hijacked by the adversary.
They are not destroyed — they are reclaimed.

Through the blood of His cross, Christ will reconcile the universe.

And we — the Body of Christ — have a part in that.

We are not saved merely to be forgiven.
We are saved to be placed.

“…that we should obtain an inheritance…” (Eph. 1:11)

A governmental, heavenly inheritance.

▪️So What Are “Those Things Above”?

They are:

• Christ as Head
• Our identity in Him
• Our heavenly position
• Our future inheritance
• Our part in God’s eternal plan
• The reconciliation of the heavenly realm

This is why Paul says:

“Set your affection on things above…” (Col. 3:2)

Not for escape.
Not for mysticism.
But for understanding who we are.

Because what God is doing in the heavens today…

He is doing through us — the Body of Christ.
