“…which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” — Acts 3:21
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” — Titus 1:2
Sometimes the smallest phrases unlock the biggest truths.
Consider these two expressions:
“Since the world began.”
“Before the world began.”
At first glance, they may seem interchangeable.
But they are not.
When we rightly divide the Word of truth, these two phrases help us understand the distinction between Prophecy and the Mystery, Israel and the Body of Christ, and God’s earthly purpose and His heavenly purpose.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15
God’s Word is perfectly consistent. We simply need to let it speak in its own context.
▪️”SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN” SPEAKS OF PROPHECY
Peter declared to Israel:
“…whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” — Acts 3:21
Notice the emphasis.
Since the world began.
From the earliest pages of Scripture, God progressively revealed His prophetic program.
The prophets spoke about:
• The coming Redeemer.
• The nation of Israel.
• The promised kingdom.
• The throne of David.
• The blessing of the nations through Israel.
• The Day of the LORD.
These truths were made known.
They were spoken.
They belong to prophecy.
God was unfolding His earthly purpose before the eyes of His people.
▪️”BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN” REACHES EVEN DEEPER
Now listen to Paul’s words:
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” — Titus 1:2
And again:
“Who hath saved us… according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.” — 2 Timothy 1:9
Paul takes us farther back than Genesis.
Farther back than Abraham.
Farther back than the prophets.
He takes us into the eternal counsels of God.
Before the world existed, God purposed grace in Christ.
That does not mean the Mystery was revealed before the world began.
Rather, God’s gracious purpose was established before creation, even though its details remained hidden until He revealed them through the Apostle Paul.
▪️PROPHECY WAS REVEALED. THE MYSTERY WAS HIDDEN.
This is where many believers become confused.
Peter says God’s prophetic program was:
“…spoken… since the world began.”
Paul says the Mystery was:
“…kept secret since the world began.” — Romans 16:25
Notice the contrast.
Prophecy was proclaimed.
The Mystery was concealed.
The Mystery was not hidden in the Old Testament waiting to be discovered.
Paul explains that it was:
“…hid in God…” — Ephesians 3:9
When the risen Christ saved Saul of Tarsus and made him Paul, He revealed truths that had never before been made known.
Not because the prophets overlooked them.
But because God had intentionally kept them hidden until His appointed time.
▪️GOD HAS ONE ETERNAL PURPOSE
Sometimes people hear these distinctions and assume God has two unrelated plans.
Scripture presents a richer picture.
God has one eternal purpose centered in His Son.
Within that purpose, He has revealed different stewardships at different times.
• Israel belongs to God’s prophetic program.
• The Body of Christ belongs to the Mystery program.
• Israel’s hope is earthly.
• Our calling is heavenly.
• Israel’s kingdom was foretold.
• Our heavenly position was revealed through Paul.
Right division does not divide God.
It distinguishes what God Himself has distinguished in His revelation.
▪️PAUL’S APOSTLESHIP IS ESSENTIAL
The risen Christ entrusted Paul with a unique ministry.
Paul writes:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.” — Romans 11:13
This does not diminish Peter or the Twelve.
It simply recognizes that Christ gave Paul a distinct stewardship for the present Dispensation of Grace.
If we want to understand our doctrine, our identity, and our hope today, we must pay careful attention to the revelation Christ gave through Paul.
▪️THE GOSPEL FOR THIS DISPENSATION
The center of God’s present message is not an earthly kingdom.
It is a finished cross.
Paul reminds us:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
This is the gospel of the grace of God.
Salvation is not earned.
It is received.
Not by works.
Not by ceremonies.
Not by keeping the Law.
But by faith alone in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Because of Him, every believer is accepted in Christ, complete in Him, and blessed with “all spiritual blessings in heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3).
▪️WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?
Understanding the difference between “since the world began” and “before the world began” transforms the way we read Scripture.
• We see prophecy and Mystery without confusing them.
• We appreciate God’s faithfulness to Israel while rejoicing in His grace toward the Body of Christ.
• We stop mixing Law with Grace.
• We rest in our heavenly identity instead of trying to claim promises that belong to another program.
Most of all, we marvel at the wisdom of God.
Long before creation, He purposed grace in Christ.
Throughout history, He faithfully unfolded His prophetic promises.
And in this present Dispensation of Grace, He has revealed the riches of the Mystery through the Apostle Paul.
▪️A FINAL THOUGHT
The difference between “since the world began” and “before the world began” is more than a matter of wording.
It is one of the keys that opens the storyline of Scripture.
What was spoken since the world began belongs to God’s prophetic program for Israel.
What God purposed before the world began, and later revealed through the Apostle Paul, magnifies the riches of His grace toward the Body of Christ.
When we rightly divide the Word of truth, the Bible does not become fragmented—it becomes beautifully unified. We see the harmony of God’s eternal purpose, the certainty of His promises, the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work, and the privilege of our heavenly calling.
May we stand firmly in that grace, rejoice in who we are in Christ, and faithfully proclaim the glorious gospel of God’s grace until our Blessed Hope becomes sight.
