One of the most powerful exhortations the Apostle Paul gives to believers today is found in Galatians 5:1:
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
Those words are not casual advice.
They are a call to vigilance.
A call to hold your ground.
Because the liberty we have in Christ is constantly under attack — not only from the world, but often from religion itself.
▪️Christ Has Already Made Us Free
Notice what Paul says carefully.
He does not say earn your liberty.
He does not say work toward freedom.
He says:
“Christ hath made us free.”
The freedom is already accomplished.
The cross did the work.
When Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3–4), He accomplished everything necessary for our salvation.
Salvation is not a ladder to climb.
It is a gift to receive.
“Being justified freely by his grace…”
— Romans 3:24
Grace does not ask us to complete what Christ started.
Grace tells us that Christ finished the work.
▪️The Danger of Returning to Bondage
Yet the Galatian believers were being tempted to return to something familiar.
The Law.
Teachers had come in telling them that faith in Christ was not enough.
They needed:
• law-keeping
• religious rituals
• outward performance
Paul calls this system a yoke of bondage.
A yoke was a wooden beam placed on animals to control and restrain them.
The Law functioned the same way.
It demanded perfect obedience.
It placed people under constant pressure.
It exposed sin but could never remove it.
No wonder Peter once described the Law as:
“A yoke… which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear.”
— Acts 15:10
Grace lifts that burden.
Grace replaces striving with rest.
Grace replaces performance with faith.
▪️The Pattern Is Not New
What was happening in Galatia had already happened before.
Think about the nation of Israel after God delivered them from Egypt.
They had been rescued from slavery.
Delivered by God’s power.
Yet shortly afterward they said:
“Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt!”
— Numbers 14:2
Astonishing.
They wanted to go back.
Back to the very bondage God had rescued them from.
The Galatians were making the same mistake spiritually.
They had been set free in Christ…
Yet they were being persuaded to return to religious bondage.
And believers today face the same temptation.
▪️Liberty Is Not Lawlessness
Christian liberty is often misunderstood.
Some think liberty means carelessness.
Others think liberty must be restrained with more rules.
But Paul explains that true liberty is found not under law, but in the Spirit.
“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
— Galatians 5:16
Notice the order.
Paul does not say:
Put yourself under the Law so you can control sin.
He says:
Walk in the Spirit.
Grace does not produce rebellion.
Grace produces transformation.
Because under grace we are not servants trying to earn approval.
We are sons.
“Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts.”
— Galatians 4:6
Sons do not obey to become part of the family.
They obey because they already belong.
▪️Guarding Your Liberty Today
Sadly, legalism did not disappear in the first century.
It simply changed forms.
Even today there are voices insisting that believers must add something to grace:
• rules
• rituals
• traditions
• performance
These teachers often appear sincere.
But their message quietly undermines the believer’s identity in Christ.
They move believers away from freedom and back toward bondage.
Paul’s answer is simple and powerful:
Stand fast.
Hold your ground.
Do not surrender the liberty Christ purchased for you.
▪️Living the Grace Life
When believers truly understand grace, something beautiful happens.
They stop striving to earn God’s approval.
They begin resting in it.
They stop living under fear.
They begin living in love.
They stop measuring themselves by performance.
They begin growing through truth.
Grace does not weaken obedience.
Grace empowers it.
Because the Christian life is not about you trying harder.
It is about Christ living His life through you.
“Christ liveth in me.”
— Galatians 2:20
▪️The Liberty Worth Protecting
So Paul’s exhortation still echoes today:
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.”
Do not trade grace for law.
Do not exchange freedom for religious pressure.
Do not surrender your identity in Christ.
You were not saved to return to bondage.
You were saved to live in liberty.
Liberty purchased by the cross.
Liberty secured by grace.
Liberty that produces a life transformed by Christ Himself.
Stand in it.
Rest in it.
Rejoice in it.
Grace and peace.
