Many believers have heard the term “dispensation of grace,” but few understand what it truly means — and why it is distinct from God’s dealings with Israel.
The dispensation of the grace of God is God’s unique program for this present age, revealed only to the Apostle Paul. It is the framework for understanding salvation, the Church, and our position in Christ today.
1. What Is a Dispensation?
A dispensation is a stewardship or administration of God’s program, showing how He works with humanity in different periods of history.
• Some dispensations were earthly and covenant-based — Israel under the Law, the Kingdom promises, the temple system.
• This present dispensation is heavenly and grace-based, revealed to Paul:
“…the dispensation of the grace of God, which is given me to you-ward” (Ephesians 3:2)
It is not prophecy. It is not part of Israel’s program. It is Paul’s special revelation, designed for the Body of Christ.
2. The Grace of God Defined
The grace of God is God’s unmerited favor, freely given, fully sufficient, and powerful to save and sustain believers:
• Salvation by grace alone: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8–9)
• Freedom from the Law: “Ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14)
• Empowerment for holy living: Christ lives in you by the Spirit (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 3:16–17)
• Heavenly blessings and inheritance: seated in Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3; 2:6)
Grace is God doing in us what we cannot do for ourselves. It is the foundation of this dispensation.
3. Why This Dispensation Is Unique
The dispensation of grace is unique in several ways:
• It is revealed only to Paul
“…by revelation he made known unto me the mystery” (Ephesians 3:3)
• It is for this present age, not the prophetic age
“…which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men” (Ephesians 3:5)
• It emphasizes spiritual, heavenly realities rather than earthly promises
“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour…” (Philippians 3:20)
• It unites Jew and Gentile in one Body, equal before God
“For he is our peace… that he might reconcile both unto God in one body” (Ephesians 2:14–16)
• It teaches the believer’s position, not just behavior
“Ye are complete in him…” (Colossians 2:10)
This is not a minor adjustment to Israel’s program. It is an entirely new dispensation, a new administration of God’s grace, designed for the Church today.
4. What Happens When We Understand This Dispensation
Understanding the dispensation of grace gives clarity and freedom:
• Salvation becomes simple — faith alone, not works (Ephesians 2:8–9)
• Our identity in Christ is secure — seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6)
• We walk by Spirit power, not law or obligation (Galatians 5:16–25)
• Unity in the Body of Christ — Jew and Gentile, one new man (Ephesians 2:15; 3:6)
• End times understanding is clear — we wait for the Rapture, not the fulfillment of Israel’s Kingdom (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)
Confusion disappears when we rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15) and respect the unique program God is running today.
5. Daily Life in the Dispensation of Grace
Walking in the dispensation of grace is not passive. It is active, empowered, and joyful:
• Trusting your salvation is secure in Christ (Romans 8:38–39)
• Walking in love and liberty, not under law (Galatians 5:1)
• Serving others from gratitude, not obligation (2 Corinthians 5:14–15)
• Speaking truth, forgiving freely, and reflecting Christ (Ephesians 4:15–32)
Grace is God’s life in operation — not striving to earn favor, but living from the position He has already given.
