Why does Paul say
“the faith of Jesus Christ”
instead of only
“faith in Jesus Christ”?
That wording matters.
Because Paul isn’t just talking about what we believe.
He’s talking about what Christ believed.
And that changes everything.
Most people think salvation depends on how strong their faith is.
But if we’re honest…
Our faith wavers.
Some days we’re bold.
Some days we’re weak.
Some days we trust.
Some days we struggle.
If salvation depended on our faithfulness,
none of us would stand.
So Paul points us somewhere better.
Somewhere safer.
Somewhere finished.
He points us to the faith of Christ.
▪️Three kinds of faith Paul talks about
Scripture shows us a helpful distinction:
• Man’s faith — trusting what God says
• God’s faithfulness — His perfect reliability
• “The faith” — the body of truth revealed for this age of grace
But then there’s something even deeper.
The faith of Christ.
Not just faith placed in Him.
But faith that belonged to Him.
▪️Did Jesus exercise faith?
Yes.
Not because He wasn’t God.
But because He became Man.
As a man, He trusted the Father completely.
He walked by faith.
He obeyed by faith.
He endured by faith.
Philippians 2 says He was
“obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
That obedience wasn’t accidental.
It was trust.
It was confidence in the Father’s promise.
It was faith that God would raise Him up and accomplish redemption.
Christ didn’t just die.
He trusted His way to the cross.
▪️Here’s the comfort of grace
This is where it gets personal.
This is where it gets beautiful.
Paul says:
“Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.” — Romans 3:22
Catch that carefully.
Not by your perfect faith.
Not by your consistency.
Not by your endurance.
But by His proven faithfulness.
We are saved because:
• He trusted perfectly
• He obeyed perfectly
• He finished the work perfectly
Our faith simply receives what His faith accomplished.
We don’t bring strength.
We bring need.
He brings perfection.
▪️Right division protects this truth
When we don’t rightly divide, confusion creeps in.
James talks about faith proven by works.
Israel’s program required demonstration and endurance.
But Paul reveals something different for this present age of grace:
“To him that worketh not, but believeth…” — Romans 4:5
Not work + faith.
Not faith + performance.
Just believe.
Why?
Because the performance already happened at Calvary.
▪️Rest in this
So when your faith feels small…
Remember:
It’s not the size of your faith that saves you.
It’s the object of your faith.
And the object is a faithful Savior.
A faithful Son.
A faithful Christ.
The One who never failed.
The One who trusted the Father perfectly.
The One whose faith carried Him all the way to the cross.
👉 We are not saved by how well we believe.
We are saved by how faithful He was.
And that…
is grace.
