The Key To Understanding The Bible

Body of Christ, Grace Message, Rightly Dividing

Here's the Key

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

Most Christians read the Bible as one continuous message written directly to them — and as a result, the Scriptures often seem confusing or even contradictory.

Why does God tell Israel to keep the Sabbath, but Paul says not to judge anyone regarding Sabbaths (Colossians 2:16)?
Why does Jesus tell His disciples to sell all (Luke 12:33), but Paul tells believers to work and provide for their own (1 Timothy 5:8)?

The answer isn’t that the Bible contradicts itself — it’s that God’s dealings with man have changed through dispensations.

• The Key: Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth

Paul writes in 2 Timothy 2:15,

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

To rightly divide means to make a straight cut — to recognize distinctions in God’s progressive revelation.
It’s not about cutting the Bible apart; it’s about putting each passage in its proper place.

Just as you can’t apply instructions from an old contract to a new one, you can’t mix God’s program for Israel with His program for the Body of Christ.

• Two Programs in the Bible

1. Prophecy – God’s Plan for the Earth through Israel

• Spoken since the world began (Acts 3:21)

• Concerns God’s covenant people, Israel

• Focus: an earthly kingdom where Messiah reigns (Isaiah 9:6–7)

• Centered around the Law, the Temple, and Jerusalem

2. Mystery – God’s Plan for Heaven through the Body of Christ

• Kept secret since the world began (Romans 16:25)

• Revealed only to the Apostle Paul (Ephesians 3:1–9)

• Focus: a spiritual Body made of both Jew and Gentile, equal in Christ

• Centered around grace, not law — faith, not works — heavenly hope, not earthly kingdom

• Why Paul Is the Key

God gave Paul a unique revelation — “the dispensation of the grace of God” (Ephesians 3:2).
This is the program God is running today.

When we understand Paul’s ministry, we finally see:

• Why we are saved by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9)

• Why we are not under the Law (Romans 6:14)

• Why our hope is heavenly (Philippians 3:20)

• Why the Church is called the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27)

Paul’s writings (Romans through Philemon) explain what God is doing in this present age — the dispensation of Grace, not Prophecy.

• Without Right Division, Confusion Reigns

Fail to distinguish between Israel and the Body of Christ, and the Bible becomes a jumble of mixed messages:

• Water baptism or Spirit baptism?

• Tithing or freewill giving?

• Forgive to be forgiven (Matthew 6:15) or forgiven already (Ephesians 4:32)?

When you rightly divide, the confusion disappears — and the Word of God opens up like never before.

• The Key Unlocks It All

The Bible is a complete revelation from God, but it must be understood in its dispensational context.
Prophecy and Mystery are both from God — but they’re not the same.

The key to understanding the Bible is to recognize that:

All the Bible is for us, but not all the Bible is to us or about us.

Want to Understand the Bible Clearly?

Start by asking:

• Who is speaking?

• To whom are they speaking?

• Under what covenant or dispensation?

When you apply these questions, you’ll find that Scripture harmonizes perfectly. The confusion fades, and Christ becomes the clear focus — not religion, not tradition, but truth rightly divided.

“Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.”
— 2 Timothy 2:7
