Here’s a question that challenges a lot of assumptions:
If the Gospel we preach today was fully known before the cross…
then why did they crucify Christ?
Paul gives the answer.
“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom… which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
(1 Corinthians 2:7–8 KJV)
Let that sink in.
It was hidden.
▪️WHAT WAS HIDDEN?
Not that Christ would come.
Not that He would be King.
Those things were prophesied.
What was hidden was the meaning of the cross in God’s plan of grace.
👉 The full payment for sin
👉 Justification by faith alone
👉 The formation of the Body of Christ
That was not revealed in prophecy.
That was the mystery.
▪️DID THE TWELVE KNOW PAUL’S GOSPEL BEFORE?
Based on Scripture?
👉 NO—they did not understand it beforehand
If they had fully understood the cross as the finished payment for sin…
They wouldn’t have been scattered, confused, and fearful when Christ died.
▪️WERE THEY PREACHING THE SAME MESSAGE AS PAUL?
This is where many get uncomfortable—but we need to let the Bible speak.
👉 The Twelve preached Jesus as Israel’s Messiah and King
👉 Paul preaches Christ crucified as the basis of salvation for all
Those are not identical messages.
They are distinct in content and purpose.
▪️IS IT A “DIFFERENT GOSPEL”?
Yes—but rightly understood.
Not “different” as in false.
But different in revelation and audience.
“But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter…”
(Galatians 2:7 KJV)
Two programs:
👉 Circumcision (Israel)
👉 Uncircumcision (Body of Christ)
▪️RIGHTLY DIVIDING MAKES THIS CLEAR
“Rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)
When you don’t divide:
👉 You blend prophecy and mystery
👉 You mix Law and Grace
👉 You confuse Israel with the Body of Christ
But when you do divide:
👉 The Bible opens up
👉 The cross becomes central
👉 Grace stands alone
▪️WHAT IS THE GOSPEL FOR TODAY?
Paul makes it plain:
“How that Christ died for our sins… was buried, and… rose again the third day.”
(1 Corinthians 15:1–4 KJV)
That is the Gospel of Grace.
👉 No works
👉 No law
👉 No performance
Just faith in Christ’s finished work.
▪️WHY THIS MATTERS
If you mix the messages…
You lose clarity.
You lose assurance.
You lose the power of grace.
But when you see what God is doing today…
👉 You rest in what Christ has already done
👉 You stand complete in Him
👉 You walk in your heavenly calling
▪️Conclusion:
The cross was not fully understood before it happened.
It was hidden.
Revealed later to Paul.
Preached now to the world.
So don’t blur what God has made distinct.
Rightly divide it. Believe it. Rejoice in it.
