(Why Many Build on Jesus—But Still on the Wrong Foundation)
In the world we live in, everyone is building something— a life, a family, a future.
And whether people realize it or not, every life is built on some kind of foundation.
The psalmist asked long ago,
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
We’ve all seen what happens when foundations collapse —houses swept away by floods, homes sliding off hillsides, entire structures that looked strong suddenly crumble because the ground beneath them gave way.
The same thing happens spiritually.
If your foundation isn’t solid, life eventually exposes it.
THE ONLY TRUE FOUNDATION: JESUS CHRIST
Paul writes:
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)
Christ alone is the unshakable rock —the way, the truth, and the life.
But here’s what most Christians never consider:
👉You can build on Jesus Christ… and still end up unstable
Not because Christ is unstable—but because you’re building on the wrong presentation of Christ for today.
Yes—there is a wrong right foundation.
How?
By building your life on the wrong message,
the wrong program,
the wrong instructions,
even though they all talk about Jesus Christ.
TWO WAYS CHRIST IS PRESENTED IN SCRIPTURE
God’s Word presents the Lord Jesus Christ in two different ways, according to two different programs:
1. Christ “according to the flesh” — Israel’s prophetic Messiah
(Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, early Acts, and Hebrews–Revelation)
Jesus on earth came:
• to confirm the promises to Israel
• to minister to the circumcision (Romans 15:8)
• to fulfill prophecy spoken since the world began (Luke 1:70; Acts 3:21)
He preached:
• the gospel of the Kingdom
• signs, wonders, miracles
• covenant promises
• Israel’s national repentance
• a coming earthly throne in Jerusalem
Peter and the 12 preached Him as:
“The Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matt. 16:16)
“Lord and Christ.” (Acts 2:36)
John wrote his Gospel specifically so that Israel would believe:
“that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God…” (John 20:31)
That is the correct foundation for Israel,in prophecy, under the Kingdom program.
But if you try to build your Christian life on that ministry today, you will be building on the…
❌ Wrong “right” foundation.
2. Christ according to the revelation of the Mystery
(Romans–Philemon)
Paul writes:
“Though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.” (2 Corinthians 5:16)
With Paul, God introduces a new revelation— a preaching of Christ wrapped in truths kept secret since the world began (Romans 16:25).
This revelation:
• is not found in the prophets,
• not found in the earthly ministry of Christ,
• not found in Peter’s kingdom message.
It was revealed first to Paul (Galatians 1:11–12).
And it forms the foundation for:
• the Body of Christ,
• salvation by grace,
• our heavenly position,
• our walk under grace,
• our spiritual growth.
Paul says:
“As a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation…” (1 Corinthians 3:10)
Why lay a foundation if Jesus already laid one?
Because Paul’s foundation is Christ according to the Mystery, not Christ according to prophecy.
Same person.
Different message.
Different program.
Different instructions.
THE TWO FOUNDATIONS EXPLAINED CLEARLY
Prophecy Foundation (Israel)
• Christ as Messiah, Son of David
• earthly kingdom
• covenants (Abrahamic, Davidic, New Covenant)
• law + works required (James 2:24)
• apostleship of Peter and the Twelve
• salvation tied to Israel’s rise (Acts 3:19–21; Zech. 8:23)
Mystery Foundation (Body of Christ)
• Christ as Head of the Body
• heavenly calling (Eph. 1:3; Col. 3:1–4)
• pure grace without works (Romans 4:5; Titus 3:5)
• apostleship of Paul (Romans 11:13)
• salvation through Israel’s fall (Romans 11:11–12)
Both are right for their program.
But only one is right for you today.
If you build your life on Matthew–Acts 7 and Hebrews–Revelation, you are building on the wrong instructions—even though Jesus is still in the picture.
WHY THIS MATTERS
You can love Jesus.
You can believe in Jesus.
You can preach Jesus.
But if you preach Him wrongly divided, you will end up with:
• confusion
• legalism
• guilt
• fear
• performance-based Christianity
•misplaced promises
• failed expectations
• unstable foundations
This is why many believers:
• pray Matthew 6 but never see “all these things added”
• claim miracles but never see them
• preach repentance and baptism yet lack assurance
• mix law and grace and burn out spiritually
Because they’re trying to live in a program that isn’t theirs.
THE RIGHT FOUNDATION—FOR TODAY
The Bible says God will establish you:
“according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery…” (Romans 16:25)
This is the foundation for:
• your salvation
• your identity
• your ministry
• your hope
• your stability
Everything God is doing today is found in:
Romans through Philemon.
Not because the rest of the Bible is untrue, but because Paul’s epistles are the only ones written to you.
They contain:
• your doctrine
• your walk
• your destiny
• your instructions under grace
You don’t follow Christ in His earthly ministry.
You follow Christ as He ministers today—from heaven—through Paul.
“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)
Not following Paul is not following Christ— because Christ sent Paul (Acts 26:16–18; Gal. 1:1).
So,
You must build your life on:
• Christ according to prophecy?
Right Person.
Wrong program.
• Christ according to the Mystery?
Right Person.
Right program.
Right foundation.
Conclusion:
There is only one right right foundation for today:
Christ revealed through Paul’s apostleship.
Everything else—even if sincere—is building on sand.
If this helped you, share it.
If it challenged you, test it with Scripture.
If it clarified things, thank God for His grace.
