When you first open your Bible, it’s natural to ask:
“What is the most important thing I really need to know?”
The truth is, there are a few foundational realities every Christian must understand to walk confidently in Christ. These are not just abstract ideas—they shape your eternity and your daily life as a child of God.
1. Know for Sure That You Are Saved
The first, most essential truth is simple but life-changing: you must know that you are saved. It doesn’t matter how much Bible knowledge you have, how many degrees you hold, or how many spiritual disciplines you practice. If you do not have assurance of salvation, the rest of life’s knowledge is incomplete.
The Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, “What must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30).
And the answer for all of us is the same today: place your faith in Jesus Christ.
Christ’s death on the cross was a complete, once-for-all payment for our sins. Romans 6:10 tells us,
“He died to sin once for all; but lives to God.”
Romans 4:25 reminds us that He was raised for our justification. The resurrection is God’s “Paid in Full” receipt, confirming that all sin has been completely dealt with.
Salvation is not earned by works.
Romans 4:5 says that faith alone justifies the ungodly. Paul said, “I know whom I have believed” (2 Timothy 1:12).
You don’t need to wonder, pray extra, or keep a running tally of your deeds to “feel saved.”
True assurance comes from faith resting fully in Christ.
When you trust Him, you receive:
• Forgiveness of sins
• Eternal life
• God’s own life and identity in you (Ephesians 1:3)
This is the foundation of everything Christian—knowing beyond doubt that your relationship with God is secure.
2. Know That You Have a Final Authority: God’s Word
Once you are saved, the next most critical step is to know that you have a final, unshakable authority in your hands: the Word of God.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
If your faith is based on man’s traditions, religious systems, or personal opinions, it will falter. To walk confidently, you need a Bible that faithfully represents God’s Word—without error.
Not all Bible translations are created equal. Many modern translations alter or misquote scripture. For example, in Mark 1:2, some translations wrongly attribute Old Testament prophecy to Isaiah instead of “the prophets,” which includes Malachi.
Only the King James Version consistently preserves the original texts as God intended.
Once you have a trustworthy Bible, you have an authority to measure all things against. Every preacher, every teaching, every religious tradition must be tested against God’s Word. It is your guide, your standard, and your safeguard.
3. Know That Your Life in Christ Has Eternal Impact
Salvation secures your eternal life, but your Christian walk impacts your role, reward, and ministry in eternity.
1 Corinthians 3:13–15 explains that every believer’s work will be tested by fire at the Judgment Seat of Christ.
The fire will reveal what kind of work was done: gold, silver, and precious stones endure, while wood, hay, and stubble burn away.
Your salvation is secure, but your rewards are based on the quality of your works in Christ, aligned with God’s truth.
Paul emphasizes in 1 Corinthians 3:10 that he laid the foundation of Christ, and others build upon it. The foundation is Jesus Christ and the revelation of the mystery revealed to Paul (Ephesians 3:3–6).
This “mystery” was hidden in previous ages but is now made known to the Church in the present dispensation of grace. The way you build on this foundation matters eternally.
2 Corinthians 5:10 reminds us:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or bad.”
This is not about earning salvation; it is about spiritual maturity and edification.
The works God examines are those that spring from faith in His Word, lived out in obedience and love.
Paul’s epistles are designed to teach believers:
• How to grow spiritually (1 Corinthians 3; 2 Corinthians 10)
• How to deny ungodliness and worldly lust (Titus 2:11–12)
• How to live righteously, soberly, and godly in this present age
Your inner man, your soul, is being prepared now for eternity. The quality of your life in Christ today determines the capacity of your joy, responsibility, and service in the ages to come (Ephesians 2:7).
Conclusion:
• Secure your salvation: Believe fully in Christ. Rest in His finished work. Don’t rely on feelings or works.
• Build on God’s Word: Read, study, and trust the Bible as your final authority. Test all teachings against it.
• Live with eternity in mind: Let the Holy Spirit use God’s Word to transform your inner man. Build eternal treasures through obedience, faith, and Christlike living.
Salvation is the foundation.
God’s Word is your standard.
Spiritual growth determines your eternal reward.
Prioritize your life around these truths, and you will not only know joy and victory now—you will have a life that glorifies Christ forever.
