— What Ezekiel 38 Is Really Talking About
Most prophecy teachers today insist that Ezekiel 38 is a prediction about Russia attacking Israel.
But when you slow down, read the passages, and rightly divide the Word, you discover something very different. Ezekiel 38 does describe a future invasion—but Russia is nowhere in the picture.
Here’s where many popular teachers go wrong:
• They make Gog = Russia.
• They claim the invasion happens before Christ returns.
Both ideas fall apart when examined through Scripture — and when you understand the difference between Prophecy and the Mystery.
1. Prophecy vs. Mystery — The Key to Understanding Ezekiel
Before interpreting Ezekiel 38, we must remember that God runs two distinct programs in His Word:
• Prophecy (Israel’s Program)
Revealed through the prophets.
Concerns Israel, their land, their kingdom, and their Messiah.
Deals with the future earthly Kingdom promised to Israel.
• Mystery (Body of Christ Program)
Hidden from ages and generations.
Revealed only to the apostle Paul.
Concerns a new spiritual organism: Jews and Gentiles in one body.
We live right now in the dispensation of grace.
Israel’s prophetic program is paused — but it will resume after the Rapture, leading into the events that Ezekiel and Daniel describe.
2. What Ezekiel 38 Actually Describes
Ezekiel says this invasion happens in the “latter days.”
That’s prophetic language for the time leading up to the Millennial Kingdom.
Key details:
• Gog is “the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.”
• Israel is dwelling safely after being restored to the land.
• God Himself draws Gog into battle for His own purposes.
Nothing in the text points to Russia.
Instead, the figure we see aligns perfectly with the coming Antichrist, not a modern superpower.
3. Daniel 8 Gives the Background
Daniel 8 shows the historical roots of the Antichrist:
• The ram = Media-Persia
• The goat = Greece
• The great horn = Alexander the Great
• His empire breaks into four parts
• From one of those regions comes the little horn
That “little horn” is the same future ruler we call the Antichrist.
Meaning:
His origin is from the old Grecian territories, not Moscow.
4. Why God Allows the Battle of Gog and Magog
The purpose isn’t political—it’s divine.
God uses the Antichrist’s aggression to:
• Judge Israel’s enemies
• Display His glory
• Purge the land in preparation for Christ’s earthly reign
The aftermath is massive — so massive Israel spends seven months cleaning up the bodies.
This isn’t about Russia.
It’s about God finishing His prophetic dealings with Israel.
5. What This Means For Us Today
Here, in the dispensation of grace:
• God isn’t dealing with Israel as a nation
• He isn’t reclaiming land
• He isn’t fulfilling kingdom promises
• He is forming the Body of Christ
Prophecy teachers who read today’s headlines into Scripture are mixing God’s programs and causing confusion.
Ezekiel 38 is future, prophetic, and post-Rapture.
Conclusion:
• Gog is the Antichrist — not Russia.
• Ezekiel 38 happens in Israel’s prophetic program, not ours.
• God’s plan today is the Mystery: the Body of Christ.
• Right division removes fear, confusion, and sensationalism.
Stick with Scripture.
Divide the programs.
Rest in God’s grace.
And keep doing what God is doing today:
preaching the gospel of grace and making all men see the fellowship of the mystery.
