Tradition vs. Scripture—How Believers Get Off Track

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

One of Satan’s greatest strategies is not always open unbelief—it is religious confusion.

When tradition is placed on the same level as Scripture, or even above it, believers slowly drift away from God’s revealed truth. Sincerity is not enough. Zeal is not enough. If our doctrine is not rightly divided, we can become sincerely wrong.

The issue has never been whether people are religious.

The issue is whether they believe what God is saying to us today.

Paul reminds us:

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

Right division is not optional—it is God’s method for understanding His Word.

Many of the contradictions people think they find in the Bible disappear when we recognize that God has revealed different programs throughout history.

👉 Israel was given a prophetic, earthly program.

👉 The Body of Christ was revealed later as the Mystery, with a heavenly calling.

👉 Israel lived under the Law and covenant promises.

👉 Today, God is dispensing His grace apart from the Law through the ministry committed to Paul.

Paul declares:

“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.” — Romans 11:13 (KJV)

This does not diminish the words of Christ during His earthly ministry. Rather, it honors God’s progressive revelation by recognizing that Jesus ministered to Israel under the Law (Romans 15:8), while the risen Christ later revealed the Mystery to Paul concerning the Church, the Body of Christ (Ephesians 3:1–9).

This is where many believers get off track.

They mix Israel’s kingdom instructions with Paul’s grace doctrine.

They blend prophecy with Mystery.

They combine Law with Grace.

The result is confusion instead of clarity.

But God’s Word was never intended to be mixed.

The gospel that saves today is beautifully simple:

“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)

Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ’s finished work.

Not by rituals.

Not by traditions.

Not by religious performance.

Because of Christ, every believer today is complete in Him, placed into the Body of Christ, blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, and secure forever in God’s grace.

Sound doctrine produces stable believers.

Right division produces clarity.

Grace produces gratitude.

So let Scripture—not tradition—be your final authority.

Study Paul’s epistles. Learn your identity in Christ. Stand fast in the liberty of grace. And rejoice in the heavenly purpose God has revealed for the Church, the Body of Christ.

When Scripture is rightly divided, confusion gives way to confidence, and religion gives way to grace.
