“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers…
come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord.”
At first glance, that sounds harsh.
Separate?
Come out?
Divide?
That doesn’t sound very “loving,” does it?
But Paul isn’t calling us to isolation.
He’s calling us to discernment.
Not separation from people…
but separation from religious deception.
Not pride…
but protection.
Not division for ego…
but unity in truth.
▪️The issue isn’t the world.
It’s false religion.
Paul mentions:
• righteousness vs. unrighteousness
• light vs. darkness
• Christ vs. Belial
• the temple of God vs. idols
He’s not talking about personalities.
He’s talking about systems.
Systems that look spiritual…
sound religious…
quote verses…
…but quietly replace truth with tradition.
God with ritual.
Grace with works.
▪️Remember Corinth
Corinth wasn’t struggling with atheism.
They were struggling with religion.
Temple feasts.
Idol worship.
“Christianized” pagan practices.
Paul says participating in those things is actually fellowship with devils
(1 Corinthians 10:20).
Strong words.
But necessary.
Because Satan doesn’t show up with horns.
He shows up with robes and religion.
▪️This isn’t new
From Babel…
to Baal…
to “Mystery Babylon”…
There has always been a counterfeit system.
A man-made religion that imitates God while opposing Him.
It looks clean.
Respectable.
Even holy.
But it keeps people from the truth of grace.
And Paul says:
👉 Come out.
▪️What separation really means
Not hating people.
Not acting superior.
Not hiding from the world.
It means:
• refusing false doctrine
• refusing religious compromise
• refusing unity that costs truth
Because real unity isn’t emotional.
👉 It’s doctrinal.
▪️Ephesians 4 explains it
“There is one body… one Spirit… one Lord… one faith… one baptism…”
Unity already exists.
But it exists in truth.
You don’t create unity by mixing error with truth.
You protect unity by standing on truth.
Firm.
Gracious.
Unapologetic.
▪️Here’s the heart of it
God isn’t asking you to be mean.
He’s asking you to be clear.
Because:
Truth divides.
Truth exposes.
Truth separates.
But truth also saves.
And unity built on truth lasts forever.
So yes…
We love everyone.
We preach Christ to all.
We show grace to all.
But we don’t yoke ourselves to systems that deny the gospel of grace.
Because the Body of Christ was never meant to blend in.
We were called out.
Set apart.
Sanctified.
Different on purpose.
👉 Unity by separation.
👉 Grace without compromise.
👉 Truth without apology.
That’s Paul’s pattern.
And that’s still God’s will today.
