(Rightly Divided — A Clear Look at the Context)
We often hear the phrase,
“That’s just my cross to bear.”
People use it to mean a burden… a hardship… a struggle.
But that’s not what Jesus meant.
Not in the Bible.
When Jesus said:
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
— Matthew 16:24 (KJV)
He was not talking about life’s inconveniences.
He was pointing to something far deeper—
something far more costly.
▪️THE CONTEXT DEFINES THE MEANING
Right before He said this, Jesus revealed something critical:
“The Son of man must suffer many things… and be rejected… and be killed…”
— (Matthew 16:21; Mark 8:31; Luke 9:22)
That’s the key.
The cross is not just pain—
It is rejection.
It is shame.
It is being cast out.
Jesus was telling His disciples:
“I am going to be rejected…
And if you follow Me, you will be rejected too.”
▪️THE CROSS WAS A PUBLIC DECLARATION
“And he bearing his cross went forth…”
— John 19:17
When Christ carried that cross,
it was a visible sign:
Israel had refused their King.
They didn’t want Him.
They chose Caesar over Christ (John 19:15).
That cross stood for rejection—open, public, undeniable.
▪️WHAT IT MEANT FOR THE LITTLE FLOCK
To “take up the cross” meant:
• Be willing to be rejected for His sake
• Be willing to stand when others turn away
• Be willing to lose acceptance, reputation—even life
Jesus made it plain:
“Whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake… shall find it.”
— Matthew 16:25
And again:
“Whosoever… shall be ashamed of me… of him shall the Son of man be ashamed…”
— Mark 8:38
This was not casual discipleship.
This was costly loyalty.
▪️A DAILY CHOICE
Luke adds one powerful word:
“Take up his cross daily…”
— Luke 9:23
Every day—
Choose Christ over acceptance.
Choose truth over approval.
Choose faithfulness over comfort.
Because following Him meant standing against a system that rejected Him.
▪️THE WORLD’S RESPONSE
Jesus warned them clearly:
“If the world hate you… it hated me before it hated you.”
— John 15:18
“Ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake…”
— Matthew 10:22
Why?
Because light exposes darkness.
Truth confronts error.
And this world system does not want Christ.
▪️RIGHTLY DIVIDED — WHAT ABOUT US TODAY?
Now here’s where we must be clear.
In this present Dispensation of Grace,
Paul does not command us to “take up the cross” in the same kingdom sense given to Israel’s Little Flock.
We are not following Christ on earth toward a rejected kingdom offer.
We are members of the Body of Christ,
blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3).
And yet…
There is still a reality we cannot ignore:
“Unto you it is given… not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.”
— Philippians 1:29
Different program—
but the same opposition.
Different calling—
but the same world system.
▪️SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?
It means:
• If you stand for truth—you may be misunderstood
• If you preach grace—you may be resisted
• If you rightly divide—you may be rejected
Not because you are wrong—
But because truth always creates a line.
Conclusion:
The cross was never about inconvenience.
It was about identification.
Identification with a rejected Christ.
So whether to the Little Flock then,
or to us in the Body of Christ now—
The principle echoes:
Stand with Him.
Even when it costs you.
Even when it isolates you.
Even when others walk away.
Because in the end—
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. – Psalm 118:22 (KJV)
Rejected by men—
But chosen of God.
Stand fast in grace.
Hold the truth without compromise.
