What Does “One Baptism” Mean in Ephesians 4:5?

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism.”
— Ephesians 4:5

That verse is simple.

But it is not shallow.

When Paul writes “one baptism,” he is not speaking loosely.
He is defining something specific to this present dispensation of Grace.

And if we do not rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15),
we will assume he means something he does not.

▪️Start With the Context

Ephesians is not written to Israel.

It is written to the Body of Christ.

Not to a kingdom church waiting for an earthly throne.
But to a heavenly people seated in Christ (Ephesians 2:6).

Chapter 4 is about unity —
the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3).

And Paul lists seven unifying realities:

• One body
• One Spirit
• One hope
• One Lord
• One faith
• One baptism
• One God and Father

Each of these defines our present identity.

So what is the “one baptism”?

▪️It Cannot Be Water

Why?

Because water baptism was not unique.

In Scripture, there were multiple baptisms:

• John’s baptism (Matthew 3:6)
• Israel’s baptism unto Moses (1 Corinthians 10:2)
• Christ’s baptism of suffering (Luke 12:50)
• Various washings under the Law (Hebrews 9:10)

Hebrews even says there were “divers baptisms.”

So when Paul says one baptism,
he cannot be speaking about the many ritual baptisms in Israel’s prophetic program.

We must let Paul define Paul.

▪️The One Baptism Is Spiritual

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…”
— 1 Corinthians 12:13

This is not water.

This is the Holy Spirit placing the believer into Christ.

No hands.
No ritual.
No ceremony.

The moment you believe the gospel —
that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1–4) —

You are baptized by the Spirit into the Body of Christ.

Automatically.
Completely.
Eternally.

That is the one baptism of Ephesians 4:5.

▪️Why This Matters

Because confusion here produces mixture.

And mixture produces bondage.

If you place water baptism as essential for today:

• You mix Israel’s program with the mystery.
• You add ritual to grace.
• You blur the sufficiency of the cross.

But in this dispensation,

We are complete in Him (Colossians 2:10).

We are sealed with the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13).

We are identified with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection — spiritually (Romans 6:3–4).

Not symbolically through water.

But positionally in Christ.

▪️The Beauty of “One”

Notice the word again.

One.

Not two.

Not parallel.

Not optional additions.

One baptism.

One divine operation that unites every believer — Jew and Gentile — into one new man (Ephesians 2:15).

That unity is spiritual.

Heavenly.

Grace-based.

▪️Rest in What God Has Done

The Christian life is not about outward ceremonies.

It is about inward reality.

You were placed into Christ.

You were sealed.

You were identified with His death.

You were raised in Him.

All without touching water.

That is not minimizing baptism.

That is magnifying the Spirit’s work.

▪️So what does “one baptism” mean?

It means this:

• One spiritual identification
• One Spirit placing us into Christ
• One unifying act in this dispensation of Grace

And when you see that —
you rest.

Because your standing is not in ritual.

It is in Christ.

Rightly divided truth protects that simplicity.

And grace keeps it pure.
