What If Christianity Was Built on the Gospels?

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

It’s a question that sounds humble… even spiritual:

“What would Christianity look like today if we just followed Jesus’ teachings in the Gospels?”

But here’s the real issue…

It depends on which Jesus you’re talking about, and to whom He was speaking.

▪️JESUS’ EARTHLY MINISTRY HAD A TARGET

Matthew 15:24 —

“I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

The Lord’s ministry in the four Gospels was not about forming the Body of Christ…
It was about preparing Israel for the promised Kingdom.

That’s why His message emphasized:

• The Law (Matthew 23:2–3)
• The Gospel of the Kingdom (Matthew 4:23)
• Covenant obedience (Matthew 5–7)
• Temple worship (Matthew 5:23–24)
• The coming earthly Kingdom (Luke 22:29–30)

None of this is random.
It fits perfectly within Israel’s prophetic program.

▪️IF WE BUILT CHRISTIANITY ON THAT…

Modern Christianity would look radically different:

• Law-keeping would be central
• Animal sacrifices would return after the temple is rebuilt
• Gentiles would be blessed through Israel
• The world would prepare for a literal Davidic Kingdom
• Salvation would be tied to enduring to the end (Matthew 24:13)

Sounds biblical — but it is not the program God is operating today.

And that’s the key.

▪️THE RISEN CHRIST REVEALED SOMETHING NEW

After the cross and resurrection, God interrupted prophecy and introduced a mystery kept secret since the world began.

Where?
In Romans 16:25 — through Paul.

That’s when we learn:

• Justification by grace through faith alone (Romans 3:24)
• The Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13)
• Our heavenly calling (Philippians 3:20)
• Our complete position in Christ (Colossians 2:10)
• Our walk under grace (Titus 2:11–12)

And that’s why Paul could say:

“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 11:1

Not because Paul replaced Jesus…
But because Jesus from heaven revealed the dispensation of grace through him.

▪️THE BEAUTY OF RIGHT DIVISION

We don’t reject Jesus’ earthly teachings — we put them where God put them.

We don’t spiritualize Israel’s Kingdom — we leave it where God said it belongs.

We don’t mix prophecy and mystery — we honor both programs.

When we do that, confusion melts away and grace comes into focus.

▪️SO WHAT SHOULD CHRISTIANITY LOOK LIKE TODAY?

It should reflect:

• Christ’s finished cross-work
• Grace without law
• A heavenly identity
• A new creature position
• A Spirit-led walk
• A ministry of reconciliation
• A future catching away of the Body
• A coming restoration for Israel after we’re gone

That’s Pauline truth.
That’s dispensational clarity.
That’s why right division matters.
