What Is Hell Like?

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

Most people can picture heaven.
Few truly consider hell.

And that’s understandable.
It’s not pleasant to think about.
But Scripture is clear — it is real, and it is terrifying.

1. Everlasting Fire

Hell is described repeatedly as a place of eternal fire (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10).

• Not temporary
• Not annihilation
• Not rest

It is continuous.
Unending.
Everlasting punishment.

This is God’s justice in full display.

2. Brimstone and Suffocating Smell

The Bible speaks of sulfur and brimstone (Revelation 21:8).

When heated, sulfur produces an intense, suffocating odor.

Imagine a place where this smell never ceases — always present, always offensive.

Hell assaults more than the mind — it assaults the senses.

3. Torment for Every Sense

Hell is designed to affect all five senses:

• Touch – unrelenting, all-over burning (Mark 9:43–44)
• Smell – the stench of sulfur and decay (Revelation 14:10)
• Sight – darkness, no light, no color (Matthew 8:12)
• Hearing – cries, wailing, gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42)
• Taste – bitterness, agony that touches the tongue (Job 20:12–13)

It is a place of total, all-encompassing torment.

4. Claustrophobia and Worms

Isaiah 66:24 tells of the worm that does not die.

Hell is a place of confinement, disgust, and horror.

No escape.
No relief.
Utter distress for all eternity.

5. No Rest — Eternal Torment

Unlike earthly suffering, hell offers no relief (Revelation 20:10).

Day and night.
Forever.
Even the devil himself is tormented eternally.

It is permanent.
It is relentless.
It is absolute.

6. Resurrection for Judgment

Every soul that rejects Christ will be raised in bodies fit for eternal torment (Daniel 12:2; Revelation 20:13–15).

Bodies that can endure the suffering without perishing.

No annihilation. No escape.
Only justice fully served.

7. Why This Matters

Hell is real.
It is serious.
It is eternal.

Jesus died to save us from it.
The gospel is urgent (1 Cor. 15:3-4).
Salvation is necessary.

Turn to Him today.
Trust Him.
Live in the light of His mercy — before it is too late.

Hell is not myth.
It is not figurative.
It is real.
It is conscious.
It is eternal.

And Christ is the only way out.

“Because by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).
