Fear can produce obedience.
Guilt can produce activity.
Pressure can produce conformity.
But none of those can produce the life that God desires today.
Only grace can.
Only love can.
That is why Paul wrote:
“For the love of Christ constraineth us…”
— 2 Corinthians 5:14 (KJV)
Notice what Paul did not say.
He didn’t say,
“The fear of punishment constraineth us.”
He didn’t say,
“The Law constraineth us.”
He didn’t say,
“Religion constraineth us.”
He said:
“The love of Christ constraineth us.”
This is one of the great differences between Law and Grace.
Under God’s program with Israel, the Law revealed God’s holy standard and exposed sin.
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster…” (Galatians 3:24, KJV)
The Law was never designed to give life.
It could command.
It could condemn.
But it could not transform the heart.
Today God is dealing with us under Grace.
Paul calls it:
“The dispensation of the grace of God.” (Ephesians 3:2, KJV)
This was part of the Mystery—truth that had been hidden but was revealed to Paul for the Body of Christ.
Paul reminds us:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…” (Romans 11:13, KJV)
That is why we must rightly divide God’s Word.
▪️ Israel vs. the Body of Christ
Israel was given the Law as part of God’s prophetic program.
The Body of Christ lives under God’s present administration of grace.
▪️ Law vs. Grace
The Law demanded.
Grace provides.
The Law exposed sin.
Grace reveals God’s finished work in Christ.
▪️ Prophecy vs. Mystery
Prophecy spoke of Israel’s kingdom program.
The Mystery reveals the heavenly calling and identity of the Body of Christ.
What, then, motivates us today?
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Not religious pressure.
But gratitude for what Christ has already accomplished.
Because the gospel we preach is not self-improvement.
It is the finished work of Christ:
“How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4, KJV)
When you believe that gospel, you are not accepted because you perform.
You serve because you are already accepted.
You don’t obey to earn God’s love.
You obey because you already have it in Christ.
Fear may change behavior for a moment.
Grace changes the heart.
And when grace captures the heart,
“The love of Christ constraineth us.”
