One of the greatest dangers in religion is not open rebellion against God.
It is sincere tradition that never gets tested by Scripture.
Many people believe what they believe simply because
“That’s what I’ve always heard.”
“That’s what my church teaches.”
“That’s how I was raised.”
But truth is not inherited.
Truth is revealed—and it is found only in the Word of God.
“Let God be true, but every man a liar.” (Romans 3:4)
▪️Tradition Can Blind — Even the Zealous
The apostle Paul is a powerful example.
Before salvation, Paul was not careless or indifferent.
He was religious, devout, and zealous.
“I profited in the Jews’ religion above many… being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.” (Galatians 1:14)
Yet those very traditions kept him blind to the truth of Christ.
Zeal did not save him.
Tradition did not enlighten him.
Religion did not correct him.
Only revelation from God did.
▪️God Separated Paul — For a Reason
Paul testifies that God did something deliberate and intentional:
“But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me…” (Galatians 1:15–16)
Paul was separated unto the gospel of God.
Separated from religious tradition.
Separated from the authority of men.
Separated for a new and distinct ministry.
This matters.
▪️Paul’s Apostleship Was Different
Paul was not one of the twelve.
He did not receive his message from Jerusalem.
He did not learn his gospel from men.
He says it plainly:
“Paul, an apostle, not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father.” (Galatians 1:1)
And again:
“I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 1:12)
This is not a minor detail.
This is the foundation of right division.
Galatians chapters 1 and 2 repeatedly emphasize this point:
• A separate apostle
• A separate message
• A separate stewardship
“But when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me…” (Galatians 2:7)
Different audience.
Different commission.
Same God—but a new dispensation of grace.
▪️The Lesson for Us Today
Tradition must bow to truth.
Preachers must bow to Scripture.
Experience must bow to revelation.
We are not called to defend what we’ve always heard.
We are called to believe what God has actually said.
Especially what He has said through Paul
to the Body of Christ
in this present Dispensation of Grace.
“Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.” (2 Timothy 2:7)
▪️A Gentle but Urgent Call
Check everything.
Compare Scripture with Scripture.
Let Paul’s epistles speak clearly and fully.
Not tradition over truth.
Not religion over revelation.
But God’s Word, rightly divided.
That is where clarity comes.
That is where freedom is found.
That is where grace shines brightest.
