🙋 If the church began at Pentecost… why is Paul called the “pattern” for the Body of Christ in 1 Tim. 1:16?
Many teach that the church, the Body of Christ, began in Acts 2 at Pentecost. But let’s pause and ask: if that’s true, why does the Bible point us to Paul—not Peter—as the pattern for believers today?
📖 1 Timothy 1:15–16
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”
👉 Notice: Paul says “in me FIRST”. That means what God started with Paul is the pattern for all who would come after. If the church already began at Pentecost with Peter, then Paul wouldn’t be “first.”
Let’s think about Pentecost for a moment.
• At Pentecost, Peter preaches to Israel only (Acts 2:5, 14, 22, 36).
• The message is: “You crucified your Messiah—repent, be baptized, and God will send Jesus back to set up the Kingdom” (Acts 2:36–38; Acts 3:19–21).
• That’s a continuation of Israel’s prophetic program, not the revelation of the Body of Christ.
But when Christ saved Paul in Acts 9, something new began. Paul calls it “the mystery” (Rom. 16:25; Eph. 3:1–9; Col. 1:25–27)—the hidden purpose of God to form a new creature, the Body of Christ, made of Jew and Gentile without distinction (Gal. 3:28; Eph. 2:13–16).
💡 That’s why Paul is the pattern.
• He was the first member of the Body of Christ (1 Tim. 1:16).
• He received the gospel of grace directly by revelation from the risen Christ (Gal. 1:11–12).
• He declares, “In Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature” (Gal. 6:15).
🙌 This is good news for us today! We’re not waiting for a Kingdom on earth, nor do we need Israel’s covenants. We are saved by grace alone through faith in Christ’s finished crosswork (Eph. 2:8–9; Titus 3:5), baptized by the Spirit into one Body (1 Cor. 12:13).
So here’s the challenge:
If Pentecost began the Body of Christ, Paul’s claim to be “the first” and “the pattern” makes no sense. But if the Body of Christ began with Paul’s salvation in Acts 9—then everything fits perfectly. ✨
👉 The church didn’t begin with Peter at Pentecost.
It began with Paul, the pattern, when Christ revealed the mystery of His grace.
