One of the most freeing truths a believer can learn is this:
The Church, the Body of Christ, is not under a covenant relationship with God.
Not the Old Covenant.
Not the New Covenant.
That may sound shocking at first because religion constantly tells believers:
“We are New Covenant Christians.”
But when we rightly divide the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15), we discover that the covenants belong to Israel’s prophetic program — not to the mystery Body of Christ revealed through the Apostle Paul.
That distinction changes everything.
“Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth… the covenants…”
— Romans 9:4 KJV
Notice carefully:
The covenants pertain to Israel.
The Old Covenant was given through Moses.
The New Covenant was promised to Israel’s future restoration.
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:”
— Jeremiah 31:31 KJV
The Bible is very specific.
The New Covenant is with:
• The house of Israel
• The house of Judah
Not the Body of Christ.
That does not diminish our blessings today.
In fact, it magnifies grace even more.
Because the Church today operates under something distinct:
“The dispensation of the grace of God”
— Ephesians 3:2 KJV
Notice Paul does not call this a covenant.
He calls it a dispensation.
A dispensing of grace.
A previously hidden purpose of God revealed through “the revelation of the mystery.”
• Prophecy spoke of covenants.
• Mystery reveals the Body of Christ.
• Israel functioned under covenant agreements.
• The Body of Christ functions under pure grace.
That is why Paul says:
“For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles…”
— Romans 11:13 KJV
The risen Christ revealed something entirely new through Paul:
“A dispensation”
“A mystery”
“A heavenly Body”
Not an extension of Israel’s covenant program.
Sadly, many believers mix these programs together.
They read promises made to Israel under covenant law and directly apply them to the Body of Christ without distinguishing prophecy from mystery.
And when law and grace are mixed together, confusion follows.
• Israel’s hope was earthly.
• Our calling is heavenly.
• Israel had covenants and kingdom promises.
• We are blessed “in heavenly places in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3)
• Israel’s program was foretold by the prophets.
• The mystery was “kept secret since the world began.” (Romans 16:25)
Those are not the same program.
Now some will ask:
“But don’t we receive spiritual blessings connected to Christ’s blood?”
Absolutely.
Every spiritual blessing we possess comes through the finished work of Christ.
But benefiting from Christ’s cross is not the same thing as being placed under Israel’s covenant program.
There is a difference between:
• Receiving spiritual blessings through Christ
and
• Being covenant participants with national Israel
That distinction matters doctrinally.
The Body of Christ today is made up of Jew and Gentile in one new man.
Not Israel.
Not Gentiles.
But a new creature in Christ.
“Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh…”
— 2 Corinthians 5:16 KJV
“For ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
— Galatians 3:28 KJV
This is why Paul constantly emphasizes grace apart from law.
Because covenant systems always involve national agreements, obligations, and earthly promises.
But the Body of Christ stands on an entirely different basis:
Grace.
Pure grace.
“For ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
— Romans 6:14 KJV
That is our standing today.
Not covenant obligation.
Not legal performance.
Not kingdom law.
Grace.
And what is the gospel that saves today?
“That Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day:”
— 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 KJV
The moment a sinner trusts Christ alone, God places them into Christ Himself.
• Completely forgiven
• Completely justified
• Completely accepted
• Sealed unto the day of redemption
Not because they entered a covenant—
but because they were placed into a heavenly Body.
That is far greater than religion offers.
Religion says:
“Enter a covenant and perform.”
Grace says:
“You are complete in Him.”
“Ye are complete in him…”
— Colossians 2:10 KJV
What a difference.
This is why sound doctrine matters.
If believers fail to distinguish Israel from the Body of Christ, prophecy from mystery, and law from grace, they will constantly struggle with confusion about forgiveness, endurance, kingdom promises, and Christian living.
But when rightly divided truth is understood, the Bible fits perfectly.
Israel’s covenants remain Israel’s covenants.
The Body of Christ remains distinct.
Grace remains grace.
And today, God is not building a covenant nation.
He is building the Church, the Body of Christ, for heavenly places.
Not under covenants—
but under grace.
