You Were Dead, But God Made You Alive

Forgiveness Only to the Quickened Colossians 2:13

Written by Ralph Mark B. Malinao

📖 “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses” (Colossians 2:13 KJV).

Think about that for a moment. Paul is reminding the Colossians of their past condition—and ours too.

👉 Before you believed the gospel, you weren’t just “sick” or “struggling.” The Bible says you were dead in your sins. Cut off from the life of God. Spiritually lifeless. (See also Ephesians 2:1).

But then something happened! 🙌

💡 The moment you trusted the gospel of Christ—that He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3–4)—God did something miraculous:

• He quickened you (made you alive) together with Christ.

• He forgave you all trespasses—not some, not most, but all!

Notice carefully: forgiveness is not automatic. It is not something everyone already has. Paul didn’t say the Colossians were forgiven while still dead in sins. No! Forgiveness came when they were made alive in Christ by faith in the gospel.

💬 That means today, just like then:

• If you have believed the gospel Paul preached, you are alive in Christ and fully forgiven. ✅

• If you have not believed, you are still dead in your sins—without life and without forgiveness (Ephesians 2:12). ❌

🚨 That’s why Paul was sent with urgency: “to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me” (Acts 26:18 KJV).

Forgiveness is something you receive when you trust Christ—it is not something you already possess apart from Him.

❤️ Friend, God is offering you new life in Christ. Don’t stay dead in your sins when you can be made alive and forgiven forever the moment you believe!

🙌 Salvation is by grace through faith alone—no works, no religion, no law-keeping. Only Christ crucified and risen for you.

Forgiveness belongs to those who are quickened (made alive) in Christ by faith in Paul’s gospel—not before!

💭 Question for You:
If forgiveness and new life only come after believing the gospel, are you still dead in sins—or alive in Christ?
